“It was the best four years of my life,” Zuko says and finally the words rolling off his tongue sound right even though in a way, he’s signed his own death warrant. He’s admitted to it now, that he loved it in the Earth Kingdom and riding the open seas, that his banishment opened his eyes and for the first time he saw the world for what it really was.
He was in exile before, but now, he’s a traitor.

“Close your eyes, and don’t peek,” Lee said to a disheartened Jin. She smiled and put her hands over her eyes. Zuko looked around the street and walked closer to the fountain. Figuring that it would only take seven seconds to light all the lanterns, he took a stance and got started, directing orange tongues of flame at every single lantern.
What could Lee possibly be doing that would take this long? Jin thought. I hope he’s not doing anything reckless. Maybe I should check just to make sure.

“Yeah. Teaming up with the Avatar and everything, right?” Zuko smiled at that, nodding slightly. “Is that important?” Jin said, nudging his discarded papers slightly.
He hesitated, mind going over all he had to get done. He caught his uncle’s eye from across the room, the pointed look reminding the young Firelord of his earlier words about taking a break… and the many concurring statements from his friends. He looked back to his illegible notes, ink messily drawn onto the papers. It might not be the worst thing to step back for a moment, clear his head. After all, that was why he had come to Ba Sing Se, to get a fresh perspective.
