Mike is not the man Father is. Not so clear-cut and willing to do the cutting. When Michael makes mistakes — because he does, of course he does, he always does — he doesn't lock Michael up or beat him or scream at him until his ears are ringing. He doesn't give Michael orders and then pick apart how well he'd completed them, always finding faults, finding something worth punishment. Mike doesn't make it make sense. He's patient and awkward and rough and kind and tired. He asks Michael what he did today and seems content even when Michael did nothing. He is proud when Michael showers or eats or draws.

His eyes wandered to those of Michael Afton, who was standing in front of the mirror, his hands on his chest as if that would make him invisible, and there were more scars on his arms, as well as on his skinny legs.
His eyes were wide open. His face was contorted in a grimace of terror. Trembling lips whispered, “Go away,” which Mike, despite everything, ignored.
