“Well,” Bruce said. He looked over to Talia, sitting beside him on the couch, and he took her hand in his own. “Actually.”
“Actually, what?” he asked.
“Well,” Bruce said again. “Talia and I are going to try to have a human baby together.”
Dick’s jaw dropped.

Grayson had put up a picture of the baby on the mantle before he’d left. The baby in the picture had Damian’s eyes and his hair and his mouth was open in a wide, gummy smile.
The very sight of it made Damian nauseated.

They drove on in silence.

Summary
Dick snickers against Damian’s soft hair as he pulls him close and Damian limits himself to settle with an annoyed huff, but Dick sees through the facade in the way the teen practically melts against him. Hah, same old dance since he was ten, really.
“Getting too old for this, Richard.” Damian tries to plea his case but Dick just scoffs.
“You could have gray hair and still be my baby brother.”
“I’m fifteen years old, you know?”
Fifteen years old indeed, Dick thinks with awe, unable to grasp where the years had gone by when it feels just like yesterday when Damian had been just ten years old, hands so small and baby fat still lingering on his cheeks.
He's almost all sharp cheekbones now, Dick realizes when he manages to sneak a kiss on each cheek, laughing at the faux gagging noises he gets for openly loving his family. My gosh.
((or the one where there's a fine line between dreaming, memories, and just a glimpse into your future without knowing, and Dick's too focused on filling his lungs with air, one breath at the time just to keep himself afloat, to even consider that the vivid dream of a future that was stolen from him isn't a dream to begin with.))

Damian hit the mat. Hard. He pretended it didn’t hurt, but Cass could see the wrinkles of a barely suppressed wince in the corner of his eyes. She reached out a hand to help him up. He didn’t take it, instead flipping to his feet the same way Dick did.
“Too easy.” It was true - she and Damian were usually a much closer match. Damian let out a sound of frustration and stalked across the training mats towards his water bottle. “Something is wrong.”
His spine tensed slightly. He refused to look at her. “I am fine.”
“Lie.”
or: When Cassandra's father made her kill, she left. When Damian was given the same choice, he stayed. Years later, anger and resentment starts to bubble under the surface when Damian can't stop wondering what that says about him.

To his surprise, it was not weapons or armor, or even one of the more romantic gifts Talia used to send him. Instead, it was a large, leather-bound book, thick and new. He ran his fingers over the cover and flipped it open. His breath caught as he saw the first page.
A photo of a little boy, no more than two, wrapped up in a huge Batman cape that practically swallowed him whole, green eyes piercing through the cowl. Beneath, in Talia's spiky cursive, read: Damian, age 2 and ½.

Summary
Tim, Damian, Jason, and Alfred all have summer birthdays. But celebrations also bring up some unwanted memories. And with Bruce back and a string of missing persons cases to solve, there's a lot more than presents to unpack.
This was just supposed to be a short interlude between "Seasons of Darkness, Seasons of Light" and the next fic, but it kind of got away from me. It's still very much "Seasons of Darkness, Seasons of Light: Verse Two"; we are hitting the same thematic notes, over and over again. (Also, I'm not your mom, so read whatever you want in whatever order you like, but this will make a lot more sense if you've read Seasons of Darkness, Seasons of Light first.)
The fic is complete, so I will be uploading quickly, probably several chapters a day.
