Vi scoffed and stomped forward, the gravel crunching beneath her feet as she approached Caitlyn, who looked up at her with an empty, disinterested expression.
She stopped right in front of her, chest puffed out, voice dripping with venom.
“Good lord, Kiramman, maybe pace yourself for once. What’s the plan? Smoke yourself into an early grave so we don’t have to deal with you anymore?”
Caitlyn’s head jerked slightly, her features a cool mask of indifference.
“Though I am flattered by your concern," she said icily, taking a slow, deliberate drag from her cigarette, “I assure you that I am perfectly capable of handling myself, thank you very much.”
“Oh, yeah? Is that why you’re here?”
Caitlyn slightly perked one of her eyebrows. The look on her face made Vi immediately feel incredibly stupid and childish.
“No. I am here to smoke a cigarette. In peace. Why are you here?”

Caitlyn’s eyes flicked to the bandage at her side, then back to her face. Her reply came just as gently, a mirror of that same effort to keep things from unraveling. “You didn’t.”
Vi leaned against the doorframe, favoring one side. She gestured vaguely at herself, her mouth tugging into the shadow of a smile. “Looks worse than it is.”
A joke missing its punchline.
Caitlyn didn’t smile. She didn’t even blink.
She wanted to drag Vi to the mirror. Make her look. Make her see the woman Caitlyn had just watched stagger into their home. The blood. The bruises. The way she always seemed to walk the line between defiant and self-destructing, like she thought pain made her real.

A one-shot set after the war, after Caitlyn and Vi return to their roles as Enforcers — after a day that left them both gutted.

Everything she was, had been, wanted to be, was sewn into the fabric of the responsibilities she shouldered from the moment Powder had emerged screaming, and again when the circle of life had constricted like a deadly snake and Vi had seen her mother’s eyes without life, and then again when she became a leader, a role model for her siblings, a dependable daughter for Vander.
Somewhere, in the tangle of tragedy following the echoed footfalls of a certain prissy enforcer, Vi began to believe there was more to herself than being Powder’s sister. Vander’s daughter.
Vi couldn’t tell you how or when the shift occurred, but she could tell you the root of it.
Said root stood in the entrance of their closet, tall and lanky and beautiful.
