Dipper pushes him, flushed and grinning. “Shut up! You’re so dumb. I assure you, I’m well behaved. This slut has hung up his glory days.”
Wirt whispers, just loud enough for the other to hear, “Well, hopefully there’s still a little left in you. Maybe just enough of a slut for me?”
He had meant it as a joke, but Dipper’s cheeks go dark, and his eyes slide to half mast, something like desire buried deep within. Wirt swallows, feeling the temperature rise. He rests his hand on Dipper’s waist, mimicking the younger man’s expression.
Dipper leans up onto his tippy toes, Wirt bending down--
“Dipper, I need your help with the gas!”
“Wirt, I saw a squirrel with spider legs!”
The two pull apart, displeased at the interruption.

“Help!” He cried. “My brother needs help!” In seconds a group of nurses surrounded him.
“What happened?” One of the nurses asked. Another came up next to him, reaching out and attempting to take Ponyboy out of Soda’s arms. A panic bubbled up inside of him as he tightened his grip on his little brother.
“No!” he cried protectively.
“Sir, we have to take him,” another woman said.
“Soda, let the nurse help,” came Steve’s voice. Soda felt like a live wire; like a trapped, wounded animal trying to protect its child. His body felt distant from him as the nurses finally took Pony away, and Soda pretended not to notice how Pony’s pale arm hung limply at his side. Steve guided him gently to the waiting room, where Soda sank to the floor in a haze.
Pony’s blood was all over him.

“Come on Darry, want to help me make lunch for us all?” Darrel asked, voice loud and bright and Darry nodded as he moved to follow Darrel, squealing as he was instead picked up. Cheryl laughed as she wrapped her arms around Sodapop and settled him down so that she was partially cradling him.
“You want to meet your baby brother, Soda?” Cheryl asked, and Sodapop made a noise of excitement as he nodded his head quickly. “Okay, okay,” Cheryl laughed, running one hand through Sodapop’s hair as he settled down from a burst of energy. “This, Soda, is Ponyboy,” Cheryl reached and pulled the carrier to her, picking it up and setting it on the couch beside her.
Sodapop peered over her arm, which was blocking him from getting too close, and stared down at the tiny baby. There was a moment where Cheryl worried that Sodapop would not react well, but then he cooed, reaching one hand to rest over Ponyboy’s swaddled form.
“Hi Ponyboy, ’m Sodapop,” Sodapop’s voice was hushed as Ponyboy’s eyes landed on him. Cheryl waited a moment before Ponyboy made a noise that sounded generally happy, and then he started squirming and beginning to look frustrated.
