The rocket strikes through the heart. Reality collapses in less than five seconds.
Jayce rebuilds Viktor, little by little, piece by piece.
And if his partner comes back from the dead a little different, well... what's not to love? Jayce is a quick study. He can adjust himself into a suitable form. He pledged himself to this task a dozen years ago; he's in it for the long haul.
*
To put it bluntly: this is the one where Dr. Frankenstein runs away with his bride.

Summary
The year is 1953. Somewhere, Frederic Wertham is writing the book that will end the Golden Age of comics.
Somewhere else, J. Edgar Hoover is writing a memo that will scrub the "un-American" from the ranks of the FBI.One of these things will be the end of Eel O'Brian, otherwise known as Plastic Man—unless he reevaluates his priorities real quick. Lucky for him, if he's anything, he's flexible.

“You probably do not think this is cruel,” GLaDOS says suddenly, not taking her gaze from the mouse for a second, “After all, you have such enormous capacity for cruelty, I doubt you can recognise mistreatment even when it is right before your eyes. However, a normal human with basic abilities of empathy, love, and compassion, would correctly identify my treatment of this animal as cruel.”
Chell says nothing.
“However, if this experiment were to be submitted to an ethics committee, it would receive full approval. Cruelty, in and of itself, is not wholly banned in science, after all. It is simply needless cruelty, the kind you excel in, that is not permitted. What I am doing is necessary for testing conditions. What I do is the only way for knowledge to progress.”

He died. I called Shoko, and said the moment the line connected, he died.
I said it in a rush, as eager as a man finally cleared of all allegations.
Don’t you ever take pity on me, I said to her.

A likely young man, Captain Crozier had written of Hickey: diligent, industrious, and clever.
Goodsir privately added observant, curious, and maybe not altogether trustworthy.
He weighed all of that together and said, “I’ll be very happy to have your help, Mr. Hickey.”

“Worse than last time?” Jayce posits a guess.
“It’s, eh-” Viktor shrugs. Tilts his chin this way and that. A tsk. “Bearable. I’ve endured worse hangovers in college.” he was going for a laugh, but the punchline never truly lands. Instead, Jayce’s thumb rubs softly into the back of his palm, pressing like he wants to idle the muscle mass into something new. It’s such a small thing, whatever this is, and yet it steadies the flow of his blood; the relief of loosening a valve, flicking off a pressure switch. It’s the necessary cracking-open of his breast. Jayce squeezes. Viktor allows himself the luxury of a sigh. “You shouldn’t be here.” he mutters.
Jayce reflexively shakes his head. “I took the day off.”
“We both know that’s-”
“—I could take the week.” he insists, almost a threat, a flicker of that eternal stubbornness coursing through him.

“You’re never going to be anything else, Greg. Greg the egg. Cousin Greg, the tall drink of fish out of water”
“Uh, I don’t think—I—is that how it goes?”
This is the second time Tom’s walked into his apartment—does he have a key? How the fuck does he have a key? Did Kendall give it to him?—and the Greg’s-lost-count time Tom’s insulted him unprovoked. Before that, though, Tom had stormed to the fridge and downed half a beer in one furious, choking series of gulps.

Bookmarker's Notes
my eye can’t stop twitching this is so good and i can hear it perfectly in those little white man cadences. okay second time ive reread this i can say without hesitation this is the most tomgreg ever. my problem w succession in general is that it’s so good i personally would not be able to add anything. this fic added everything. this fic opened my eyes and i see new horizons. every aspect of this fic is so excellent like every word was so smoothly selected but also handcrafted with experience and ease. the word mastery comes to mind. wow.
