Suffice it to say, if Lan Wangji had sent him a letter at any point during these last two years, Jiang Cheng would’ve found it.
"You wrote back?!" There was no way...
“Mn.” Lan Wangji squinted at the Sect Leader as if he was the stupidest person the Lan had ever met. “Of course, I did.” Of course, he did. Jiang Cheng could feel his eyes burning again.
“Jiang Wanyin. Please do not cry. I will not know what to do-”
“You already don’t know what to do-!” Jiang Cheng sniped back.
“At this point, you will drown.” Lan Wangji was referencing the tears falling down Jiang Cheng's face, but still used the edges of his robes to gently wipe them away. “Would you recover? Do you even know how to swim?”
“I grew up in Lotus Pier, you good-for-nothing asshole! Of course, I know how to swim-!"
And then came an idea.

Summary
“Your breath stinks,” Jiang Cheng eloquently croaked out.
And that was a lie, it smelled of mint and tea leaves--it was intoxicating, but he was prepared to die before admitting that out loud.
“And you are quite unpleasant to look at.” And yet, Lan Wangji made no move to push Jiang Cheng off of him.
Jiang Cheng scoffed, “Then stop looking at me.”
Whether it was intentional or not, Lan Wangji leaned in so that now their foreheads were touching. “You first.”
“Oh..?”
At the unexpected newcomer's voice, Jiang Cheng found himself being flung almost a meter away-- courtesy of Hanguang-jun and his freakish Lan strength --landing on his back with an irritated groan.

Or, frenemies to lovers in the style of Zhancheng. Excessive bickering, unresolved (and then resolved) sexual tension, and heartful confessions ensue. -

Summary
And then Jiang Cheng tripped. He’d fought in countless wars, had brought enemies twice as powerful down to their knees, and yet today, he forfeited his winning streak to a rock.
Jiang Cheng snapped his head up with a glare, and was met with the sight of his asshole brother-in-law staring down at him, flicking a pebble up and down in the air before intentionally letting it fall onto Jiang Cheng’s nose.
“You should be more aware of your surroundings,” Lan Wangji commented in lieu of a greeting.
“You’re right,” Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes. “I guess my 'jackass radar' must be rusty then-”
“Interesting. Does this mean you’ve been able to sense Wei Ying's pet right outside the gates then?”
“You-!” Lan Wangji flicked another pebble at him.

(Or, Jiang Cheng has to return Lotus Pier for an indefinite amount of time, so he and Lan Wangji stir up some chaos and bring everyone else along for the ride before he does. Bickering, turtle armies, heartfelt confessions, and scheming ensues.)

Summary
“Did you paint that yourself?” Lan Wangji was pointing a slim finger towards the fan sticking out of Nie Huaisang’s pocket. It was one of his favorite works, inspired by the hyacinths that bloomed in the cool of Cloud Recesses.
Nie Huaisang nodded, slowly, stricken that Lan Wangji of all people was initiating a conversation… with him.
“I like it.”
“You what?” Was Nie Huaisang having hearing loss?
Lan Wangji blinked slowly. And though Nie Huaisang claimed to be very observant, he missed the way the Lan’s ears began to turn red. “I like it...I like many of your paintings actually…”
Now it was Nie Huaisang’s turn to slowly blink at him. Why wasn’t his mind working? Why did it feel like his chest was on fire? Were heartbeats supposed to be this rapid? Was he having a qi deviation-?
“I will leave now.” Lan Wangji announced, voice almost strained.

(Or, Nie Huaisang prides himself on being able to figure people out but Lan Wangji...even after three decades of knowing the man, still remains an enigma.)

“I get it. This is about...You’re still mad about…” Wei Wuxian made a vague gesture to Jiang Cheng’s abdomen, roughly where his golden core would be found. Jiang Cheng’s fists tightened at his side.
“You’re making this into something it’s not! You don’t have to be guilty about this anymore!”
Easier said than done. Jiang Cheng thought to himself, however, “That’s not the point!”
“God, Jiang Cheng!” There was visible frustration on Wei Wuxian’s face now. He couldn’t nonchalantly smile or grin his way out of this. “Why can’t you just accept that I did it to protect you?!”
“Because it makes my sacrifice meaningless! Because it means that I did nothing to protect you!”
Wei Wuxian froze. “...What...what are you talking about?”

(In order to escape a cursed cave, Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian must reveal a "worthy secret" to one another. Or, Jiang Cheng finally reveals the truth about how he got captured by the Wens and lost his golden core all those years ago.)
