Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.
“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”
“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.
“Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”
This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.
It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.

Ilya and Shane arrived at the cottage two weeks ago. Post-season relaxation during the summer is usually their favorite time of year, especially after a hard season.
This season was emotionally, physically, and mentally draining. The games were a lot more challenging than typical seasons. A lot more bruises and a lot more time recovering overall. This is the year Ilya and Shane decided they were no longer hiding in the dark. This was their first season publicly as husbands. When they say the first year of marriage is the hardest, add being in the MHL, coming out as gay/bi, starting a charity, and, unfortunately, depression.
Sometimes the best way out of the darkness is a pair of headphones, the love of your husband, and a catchy song

Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.
“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.
Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.
They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

Rozanov didn't just sound wrecked, he looked it, his flushed face hovering above Shane's, rosy mouth parted and panting, pupils almost completely eclipsing the blue, artery jumping in his neck so alluringly that Shane felt the impulse to bite it, to feel Rozanov's heartbeat between his teeth and know that Shane was the one making it race like that.
The impulse was so strong that it scared him, Shane quickly shoving it down, using his hands to pull Rozanov down for a kiss instead, desperate and hungry, hiking his other knee up higher against Rozanov's side and—
"Holy shit, Rozanov."
