"“Emrys,” said Gaius, raising the Eyebrow of Disappointment and flicking his gaze to where Merlin stood behind Arthur’s chair. “That is who you wish to have as your court sorcerer.”
Arthur nodded gravely, every eye in the council meeting upon him. “Camelot is dangerously close to division even now that sorcery is legal. We need someone who will unite us all, and I cannot settle for less. I’ll send riders out at first light chasing rumours and follow up any promising leads we have myself.”
He looked so beautiful when he said it, every inch the king, with the sunlight through the windows turning him gold. His voice had taken on that richness that sometimes infused Arthur’s words – that for the good of the kingdom voice, that let it be so voice, the voice that Merlin had come to understand meant another brick laid on the road to Albion.
Unfortunately, that voice had been co-opted for a fucking farce."

Summary
After accidentally witnessing Merlin's magic during a bandit attack, Arthur keeps the discovery to himself while he ponders what he thinks about it. Soon afterward, he follows his servant as he slips out of the city one night and hears a conversation not meant for his ears. He realizes Merlin has been isolated, manipulated, and ill-advised, and is suffering deeply from his life of secrecy, all for Arthur's sake. Is it too late for Arthur to bring his friend back to the cheerful, trusting friend he once was?

Summary
Arthur turned his head slightly, letting Tornac’s melodramatic voice fade as he eyed Merlin, expecting a shared smirk and an eye roll.
Instead, Merlin was staring at the table, his eyes glazed over, completely unaware of Arthur and possibly the entire room. His face was white, and a muscle in his jaw was jumping periodically, obviously pulled tight by a clamped jaw. In his lap, Merlin’s left hand was a white-knuckled fist.
For a moment, Arthur thought Merlin was simply fed up. Tornac had been talking for at least fifteen minutes, and Arthur, firm in his decision to let the lords speak their concerns, hadn’t interrupted him except to calmly answer his questions. But Merlin, as a warlock, would be justifiably sick of the man’s relentless opposition. Arthur certainly was.
But it was only seconds before his brain caught onto what his eyes were seeing and made a connection, one that at one time would have made no sense, but that now was very likely to be true.
