He expects the chatter of a room to drop when he enters and its disconcerting to find it doesn't yet in Ottawa.
He stands at the entrance a beat too long.

Summary
Ilya was used to hazing. He had been subjected to it, he had participated in it, and, as a captain, he had stood guard over the rookies and protected them from anything truly harmful. But if he had been asked, Ilya would have approved of this prank. He would have authorized it, given Cliff and Vicky his seal of approval, perhaps even helped orchestrate it.
Any other day, Ilya might have been happy to play along.
But, in perfect dramatic irony, it had not happened any other day. It had happened today. And, cherry on top, of course the rookie had to walk in when Shane was already freaking out about Ilya saying his name.

A prank-gone-wrong leads to the Boston Bears finding out about Shane and Ilya’s relationship in 2016. The day Ilya first invited Shane into his house. Right after they say each other’s names for the first time. Fuck his life, honestly.

Summary
When Troy Barrett first mentioned to Ilya that he and Harris had to disclose their relationship to the team management, Ilya couldn’t understand why it would matter. “The team has policies about this stuff, they don’t want to get sued or anyone to think I’m getting special treatment.” Troy tried to explain. “Everyone is ok with it, but we just needed to tell them.”
When the team had to complete mandatory anti-harassment and discrimination training a few weeks later, the topic came up again. Any personal relationship that may be perceived as a conflict of interest must be disclosed to management.
“Do I need to tell them?” He asked Shane that night. “I know we play for different teams, but I don’t know…”
Or… Ilya and Shane each tell their coaches that they are in a relationship with another player. The two conversations go *very* differently, and Shane is forced to deal with the consequences. But he doesn’t do it alone.

Summary
Shane is crumpled motionless on the ground, curled in a ball, with Comeau kneeling on him, just hitting him. And hitting and hitting and throwing so many blows that Illya can’t count. He can’t see Shane’s face, but he very much can see that there’s blood on the ice. Blood on the toe Comeau’s skate. Blood flying from his knuckles. The puck is scattered away from them, as are their sticks.
The entire arena is silent. Waiting for Comeau to stop screaming and hitting. Waiting for Shane to move. Waiting for someone to move.

He moved to swing his legs out from under the blankets, only to feel one of them get snagged on something: Ilya’s ankle was wrapped around his own, knee pressing into Shane’s thigh. When he tried to wriggle it free, his boyfriend resisted and pulled his leg in closer. A taut arm reached out and sleepily tugged Shane back down onto the mattress. He gave in easily.
“I thought you were asleep.” Shane whispered, tersely.
He felt a small stab of irritation too. Once again, Ilya had gotten in the way of his workout routine and — even though he wasn’t doing it on purpose — it was hard not to be frustrated about it. Shane needed this. The only way he had been able to soothe his racing thoughts about flunking out of the NHL next season was by reminding himself of his plan to work out early in the morning. Now, his anxiety soared, but it felt like annoyance. Why didn’t Ilya understand that he needed to stay in shape? Didn’t he see how hard Shane had to work to keep up with everyone else?
“I woke up.” Ilya’s voice was husky with sleep, “Come back to bed, moya lyubov.”
