Jimmy walked over with a sort of false calm, the practiced sort of ease Lois had seen EMTs carry themselves with. The way she usually handled things other than Clark, before she fell in love.
“Hey buddy.”
“I’m okay Jimmy.” Clark pasted on a big smile even though he swayed, and his words ran together.
“Yeah, no. Clark, remember finals freshman year?” He waited until Clark nodded a little, “Remember what you promised me you wouldn’t do?”
Clark nodded, and had the gall to look ashamed of himself, Lois glanced between them.
There was a long pause, and then:
“It hurts a lot. Everything hurts. I’m really tired. I can’t think right. It’s hard to walk and I’m scared—” Clark paused, but Jimmy just waited, “I don’t want to hurt anyone. I don't want to fight.” Clark paused again, “I’m really tired.”

Jimmy arrived at the crater just moments after Lois did. He stopped, just before he could see, listening to the silence as he hoped desperately for some sign of life, some proof that he didn’t have to brace himself for the worst.
But he couldn’t wait forever, he had to be brave for this.
He ran the last few steps to the edge. And then he couldn’t move, his ears rung, blood frozen. He was shaking so much he could barely stand, and the ground crumbled beneath his feet until he shuffled back.
Lois had pulled Clark’s head against her stomach, bracing him with her hands. He was lying limp, his skin grey and dull, with those terrible green lines laced over it.
