    evensong by ceraunos

There have been moments through the last year when the call to home has felt like a hollow gaping in her chest, like a bullet tearing through her, fractured and messy. Now, though, it’s as if a spool of something vital from her has spun out just out of sight, a memory unwound just out of reach.

She considers writing to Booker, but what would she say? How do you cope? You don’t. How can you live carrying the same grief for an eternity? You can’t.

    [...]

‘How do I live with it?’ She whispers.
‘I don’t know,’ Nicky says. ‘But we’ll be here.’

    Summary

“Don’t worry, it’s fine.” Nile said, the stab of guilt at ruining the night coming a little harder. Joe had been so excited when he saw the bunk beds, grinning widely as Nicky said don’t let me fall off this time.

Nicky nodded but made no motion to stand up, to return to his husband’s arms. Instead he said, “I’m awake now. Do you want to go for a drive?”

“A drive?” She looked at her watch, it wasn’t anywhere close to morning. Although the idea of getting out of their windowless room is an attractive one, she can’t deny it, “Are you sure?”

In which: Nile is having trouble sleeping, and Nicky likes to drive.

    Driving Lessons by PastyPirate

“It’s like I’m in mourning. But I’m the only one who has died.” Nile caught a drip before it fell onto her hand, licking it up, “how can I mourn myself?”

Genuine and visceral character study. The inherent romanticism of late night drives and profound conversations.

In Our Bedroom After The War by ghostwit

She reaches between them, slots her fingers in the ridges of his abdomen, feels it as it softens. She thinks her hand could go right through to wrap her palms around the pain that sits there, the weight of Roger’s crown buried deep under his partner’s skin.

    Summary

“Fuji— Ruri’ro,” he choked out, a trembling hand reaching for the fractured blade. His thin fingers stretched, sleeve dragging across the dirt, until he could feel the cold metal, just brushing against the tips. “Please,” he insisted, urgently. A gurgling scream rang out behind him, and he gritted his teeth, his whole body seizing at the sound. When he spoke again, his voice shook with anger and desperation. “I know you’re in there. I won’t ever ask anything of you again, I swear it, if you just do this for me now.”

It wasn’t enough; Yumichika reached forward then, crawling further on his one good elbow, hands finally clasping around the broken blade. He brought a shard to his forehead, grasped it tightly until he felt it pierce his skin, and did the unthinkable—he begged. “Please… Ruri’iro Kujaku!

The answering light blinded his senses, and when he re-opened his eyes, it was to a bluer sky.

"You’re really going to rope me in with the rest of those meatheads?"

Yumichika's shikai reveal. Sweet soundtrack. Perfect characterization. Worth reading past the title.

Weight of a Soul by startaroux

You cling to them desperately because they’re all that you have and they’re all that you know and they’re all that you need. They’re all you’ve ever wanted.

You ask unable, to keep your worries inside you, for there is no longer a body left to hold them in.
