The fall of the first domino, the flap of a butterfly’s wings, or James Buchanan Barnes. Only a time traveler could hope to figure out which one of those things had the greatest cascade of impacts on history.
Good thing this story has one.
Bucky survives HYDRA’s experimentation just to get stuck in the future (of an alternate dimension) for a week. He’s supremely thankful for the warnings he got there, that prevented the ‘Winter Soldier’ from ever becoming one of his titles, and prevented Steve from earning the nickname “Cap-cicle”. He’s pretty sure he’s dodged both those bullets. Now he just has to make it far enough into the future to meet his alternate-future-self’s fella, and maybe help out with an alien invasion or two along the way. Piece of cake, right?

He gets a week long crash course on events and people he should look out for and is returned to Azzano about a week after Steve wrecks the place looking for him. The next 60+ years are more than worth the two weeks hiking trip back to the base. The Moon is for the gays.
Really, really fucking good.

Summary

Summary
Steve turns, feeling his heart fall out of his chest at the figure walking towards them. This has to be a dream. A nightmare— one that Steve has definitely had before.
Tony Stark walking towards them does not compute. Even with his eyes shrouded by orange-tinted spectacles, there is no mistaking that lopsided grin and casual strut onto the field even from a distance. Steve's head is swimming with questions. Tony holds so much notoriety right now that it would be near impossible to keep him transferring teams a secret, especially considering the team he would be leaving is owned by his own family.
(Aka, the fic in which Steve and Tony are rivals both off and on the baseball field— until they aren’t. And it’s also in the 90s, because why the hell not.)

Summary

Summary

Summary
In this story, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are contemporaries, and both have hard-knock lives in 1939-1941 New York. Hard to say whose is worse. Steve is sickly. Tony's a whore. They become friends-- the world is going crazy with war, adding to the tension of daily life.
Tony is/was an underage prostitute, but as that's not explicit*, I felt the warning tag was misleading, however if even that much is disturbing, I thought I'd best mention it here.
CHAPTER 22 became EXPLICIT (consensual, not prostitution) Sex, but at the time Tony was 17 years old, 10 months, and some days, so it's not all that MUCH underage. There was no explicit sex when he was younger.
(There's tons of Google Research in the times and events of daily life in NYC and world events. Where reasonable, factoids have been woven into the story, but there's a lot left over that wound up in chapter notes.)
