Hailey isn’t a stranger to touch: Dad always insists on hugs and Beth tackles her whenever she accidentally coops herself up in her bedroom for too long. It’s Jake’s touch she isn’t used to.
Distantly, she knows it should be normal, because it’s normal for the rest of her friends. She knocks out on Luke’s lap, huddles around Sean’s laptop whenever they produce together, and even hugs Milly when Zoey pisses her off a little too much. She doesn’t feel… excited, during any of that, like she guesses she does with Jake.

Lloyd doesn’t get frustrated with her. Sora thinks it would be easier if he did – she knows how to handle that. She can stand up for herself, she can run away, she can do a lot of things – but she can’t handle his overwhelming kindness. It’s different from Arin’s affection; it’s more parental. He treats her like what she imagines a daughter with a parent who loves her would be treated like. It’s not transactional, he doesn’t have expectations for her in order to love her. He just does.
OR, sora learns that love comes in many forms, and one of those is a green ninja who cares too much.

The blobby shape in front of him that he’s ninety percent sure is his sister and not some random tree is starting to come into focus again. Nya’s expression looks pinched, hand outstretched. He owes her, like, twenty thank you cards for being there during these horrible visions, Lloyd considers groggily. Or a box of cookies or something. Maybe he can get Arin to bake her a pie.
It always seems to be just Lloyd and Nya against the world. That doesn't change in the Forest of Spirits, nor after the ritual of the Blood Moon.

In Lloyd’s life there had been a lot of ‘nevers’. Most ones he's told himself as strict rules set to protect his heart. Such as, never trust a snake. Or, never expect anything good to come from your father- and especially, never let a mysterious girl get close to you again. No matter how much you think you know her. The last one rang in his mind as he looked at the girl across from him.
‘Never’ apparently didn’t mean much in the Never-Realm.
