“You are planning to rob me or what?” He hears Rozanov call, and he can’t help but smile slightly even as he rolls his eyes, closing the door to the linen closet and feeling strangely lighter than when he opened it, reassured that he’s just trying to read into a blank page, that today doesn’t mean anything more than Rozanov doesn’t mind him being around, which is strangely flattering.
“I don’t know,” he calls back. “Don’t Russians like diamonds and fur and stuff? Where should I start looking if I want to know what my options are?”
He hears Rozanov laugh, and it makes him smile.
When he joins him in the living room once more, Rozanov tugs him down to lean against him again. Shane goes easier this time, settling into it, knowing it doesn’t mean anything other than the fact that he just happens to be the closest warm body, the person on Rozanov’s roster who filled today’s slot.

“There was just something fundamentally wrong with him that made him difficult to love. And there was always a small part of him, snarling in dark corner of his mind that he liked to ignore, that feared one day Ilya would realize it.”
These were such a gut-wrenching pair of sentences because of how alarmingly real they felt. Shane is already my comfort character but the way you he’s written in this fic makes me feel like I understand him better…hell, understand MYSELF better. And god, it’s a relief.
After publicly confronting Troy for terrorizing him for years on the ice, Shane has almost no one he can talk to about it. His instinct is to go to his parents, but he’s hit by the realization that they can’t support him in the way he needs. His parents’ love for Ilya means he could never have them completely on his side, and that revelation affirms his deepest fears about not being the son they wanted. He can’t even trust that Ilya isn’t confiding in and comforting Troy in their home because he’s turned to Troy in the past over Shane. He can’t open up about their problems to Hayden and J.J. because he still feels like he needs to defend Ilya to them and protect his relationship. That Centaurs see him as the husband of their Captain rather than the greatest living hockey player that he’s worked his whole life to be. The devastating truth is that Rose is truly the only person in his entire life who’s never required him to be pretend, which is pretty ironic given how they met.
And seriously, ROSE FUCKING LANDRY. Rose is the rare female character who’s pretty universally, rightfully liked by the fandom. But most depictions of her don’t get past the surface level, and that’s including the source material. She’s lovely, and brave, and empathetic, but we don’t get a sense for why she’s that way, just that she IS. When I got to the part of the chapter where Rose started telling Shane about her past, I seriously started pumping my fist. Because OF COURSE that experience of betrayal, exposure, public shaming, and a system that will punish her if she doesn’t play nice, would give her a deep understanding of what Shane’s going through.
Now, I will admit, when Rose told Shane she knows “a bit about what it's like” my Roselana-obsessed brain immediately thought she was going to come out to him, but I couldn’t be disappointed when instead of learning about her “big lesbian secret” we discovered something else beneath the surface: her rage. And how fucking powerful it is to let yourself feel it, without caveats, shame, or remorse.
While I hope for a continuation with Ilya, I’m grateful that the author doesn’t rush into a reconciliation. Just like Shane, we really needed to sit with the emotions for a bit. The catharsis is in Shane vocalizing and accepting his own feelings, not in how anybody else receives them, which is frankly, quietly radical.
My Hollanov-loving heart wants Ilya to understand
his husband’s justified anger and how deeply he hurt the love of his life, so that he can immediately repair the damage, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it won’t be that easy. Despite Rachel Reid’s insistence that Ilya is “intelligent…observant and perceptive,” his perspective is far from infallible and his temper can be ugly when he’s caught off guard. The real suspense I feel about Ilya’s reaction makes Shane’s fears even more palpable.These chapters have been so wonderful and inspiring, and I’m so excited to read more. Whether that looks like a Hollanov reunion, a conversation with Troy, or, I don’t know, a fic exploring how Rose’s betrayal by an intimate partner caused her to seek out men who gave her a sense of safety, because subconsciously she knew they didn’t desire her at all, and how the public backlash to the invasion of her privacy could have also compounded her fear of being outed and losing the standing and respect she’s worked hard for in the industry, just like Shane, and allowing him Shane to be there for her the same way she’s always been for him, coaching her through being a queer public figure and dealing with Russian bisexuals determined to make your life complicated, I know the characterizations will be incredible. I am a fan for life!
