He threw the duvet off of his body, hairs raising when the cool morning air hit his skin. A chill ran through his body as he swung his legs over the side of the bed. His gaze shifted down to focus on the floor, lips pursed into a thin line. No matter how often this happened, there would always be a grim atmosphere on the day of the reaping.
It was the day where children would be sent to an early grave, where families were ripped apart.
The atmosphere would never be a pleasant one.

What if Jonathan was attacked on October 3rd, not Mina? How would the scene be different? Told from the perspective of Van Helsing, this fic explores the subtext of Jonathan's abuse at the hands of Dracula as well as the subtle coding of Jonathan as more feminine and Mina as more masculine, bringing these elements to the forefront. It also brings to the forefront the few comments made about Van Helsing's past and gives him more backstory, focusing on his fatherly role to the polycule. Enjoy!
