Tony has been desperately longing after Stephen Strange for the longest time, which is why he’s one of the first to notice that Stephen is…not quite the same after he returns from one of his interdimensional trips.
‘Did you kill Stephen? The one from my universe?’ Tony asked. The imposter didn’t come any closer, but he could feel the weight of his stare, could hear his Cloak swish across the floor, picking up on his master’s agitation.
‘No. It was too late to save him. It was his predetermined fate to die that day. Nothing could change that.’
‘I’m not your Tony Stark,’ he managed to croak out, the words painful on his lips.
‘I know, and I’m not your Stephen. But I am a Stephen that loves you, in any of your forms. I’m a man who traveled the universe looking for you, Tony.’

Bucky isn’t out of the bed he’s been put in to recover when he’s asked what to do with the HYDRA part. It’s alive and healing... regenerating... whatever, as well as he is, physically. They haven’t let it wake up yet. No one is completely sure it will wake up—or if it will have anything like a natural human mind, if it does. He, really. He should try to think of it as a person. Him as a person.
He doesn’t want to. He doesn’t want to think of the Winter Soldier at all.
“I take it all back, Rogers,” Tony snarls as soon as Steve picks up. “I really do want to kill Barnes.”
“Tony?” Steve yawns, rudely yanked out of dearly-needed sleep. Tony’s words hit him. “What the hell?” He thought they’d been on the way to working things out.
It’s a mark of exactly how upset Tony is that he doesn’t comment on Steve’s language. “I have half of my parents’ murderer defrosting in Hulk’s room!”
Steve bolts upright and lunges for the set of Wakandan beads that let him check for updates on Bucky. “Wait, what?”

James was telling him something speaking, pushing forward. He grunted trying to focus on the voice in his head.
“What?” He rasped aloud.
He was tired, sluggish, he just wanted to sleep.
No, come on now, not yet. We need to get the bleeding stopped.
He wanted to balk but the voice wouldn’t be stopped. It pushed and prodded talking him through it until he’d had his side bound up and the bleeding contained.
Well done.
He felt a warmth at the praise, the voice…James…he cared.

Summary
Tony has no idea why he volunteers to take care of the magically created copy of James Buchanan Barnes. First of all, the man killed his parents, be it under mitigating circumstances. Second of all, the copy appears in the shape of a two-year-old boy and Tony knows that he is, quite possibly, the least suitable person to look after a small child. Despite his misgivings, Tony is willing to give it a try, and it doesn't take long at all before he's irrevocably attached to the kid. Who knew being a parent could be so rewarding?
Of course, it's only a matter of time before Barnes shows up, making tentative but heartfelt attempts to get to know the kid. Before Tony knows it, he's spending more and more time in Barnes' company, and he isn't the least bit surprised when that complicates their already complicated relationship even further.
Tony falls in love.
