Summary
Plucking it without a care in the world. His fingers are deft and swift. No wonder he could carve lines in her psyche without seeming to exert much effort. He turns, slow, and if it made a sound Van is sure it would be akin to nails on a chalkboard or the incessant creaking of an unoiled door.
Their eyes meet, and unlike in any visage of the past he is looking at her. Directly at her. Not through her, not in her general area, but at her. His eyes widen though not in shock nor terror, but with glee.

Summary
She says that they don’t want to flood Van with all of this while she is recovering, and she can’t help but think it might be easier to recover if she knew what she was recovering from.
It feels like her brain was a carefully written letter on delicate parchment paper. Parchment paper that then had a glass of water spilled over it. Words dissolve to be illegible. They are still there, undeniably the ink stains linger, but the words - the events - are lost to time.

Summary
Van busies herself with general ship busy work, tying down what needs to be steadied before they take off, making sure the balloons are secured. It’s easy to look busy, and from far away she will look perfectly fine to continue working. It feels bad, moving to work away from where Comfrey had seemingly been trying to approach her, but she can’t let herself be taken from the current crew.
She will mask this want to be here behind the excitement for flight, a thing they invented together with Marya just a few months ago. Surely she can’t miss out on their third voyage, especially not with the ever increasing crew that she needs to train up! So she is perfectly fine to be here, because she is not sick, and is not pulling in sharp breaths.

Summary
The guilt had been near unbearable at the time of the crash. Bathed in darkness from overcast skies, black mass circling in the ocean below them as they searched so frantically for a body that Comfrey had thought they might never find. She knew the Chapman curse, knew that when a Chapman was taken by it they would never be found. It had been a miracle, seeing her claw up with only one arm. A miracle that a tourniquet could combat the curse for long enough.
However temporary solutions are just that - temporary. A net will not hold forever and neither will even the most robust metal. There is always room for something to go wrong, and in her effort to never accept this - to never linger on it - Comfrey has led them down a horrible path.

Summary
“Van, who are you talking to?”
There is a dual sound to Monty’s voice. Young and old. Joyful and concerned. The corners of her vision blur and fuzz. Her head feels like it’s being stretched and elongated before snapping back like an elastic band. Surely it’s obvious who she’s talking to.
“Haunch, obviously.”
“Haunch is dead…”
