He could almost forget that Hobbits were not as other beings of Middle-earth, and that a mountain devoid of rich plant life was not the place for one such as he.

Bilbo's hair has always grown very fast and as a Baggins, he takes pride in a neat apperance. No adventure is going to prevent him from keeping his hair trimmed! For a dwarf, however, talking about hair is very taboo, something you only discuss with family or a close lover. Cutting a dwarf's hair communicates great grief or unspeakable shame. That's why the Company are in despair when Bilbo keeps cutting his beautiful hair. They can't figure out why, when they've told him countless times his past doesn't matter to them...

The Hobbits, Fili and Kili, discovered this when they visited Bilbo to deliver in person the letter and gifts from their uncle, who was not yet recovered enough from his injuries to travel, were very strange creatures with some very strange traditions.
They just did not realise how much yet.
Their ways of getting married, in particular, were most unexpected, but that would be up to their uncle to sort it out.

Terribly sad, beautiful, gorgeous in its bleakness like a mid-Winter's dusk in a grave yard.
For one: this is gorgeous, we need more media about grief. For two: the opening is actually kinda funny. For three: some facinating ideas here about Dwarvish religion and their absolute certainty in an afterlife.
