Years ago, Stan Pines died under strange circumstances. His body was found, funerals happened, Pa was too ashamed to show up, Shermie too busy, Ma went... so did Ford...
And Ford learned a lot while at the funerals, more than he would have liked to. Like the fact his brother lived out of his car, of all places... At least, the car gave him a way to summon his brother's spirit, to talk one last time! Or it should have. It never worked... Ford kept the car anyways, for old times' sake.
In other news, a little over 30 years later, 13 year old Mabel Pines came back to Gravity Falls a year after her brother stayed back there for an "apprenticeship" with their great uncle Ford or whatever... Meaning she was alone to face their parents' divorce. And even now, her brother ignored her for his "anomalies". No big deal. None at all... Not at all the reason why she tried to leave the home at 1 am, only to be met with a homeless-looking ghost with no memories who decided to haunt her.
At least the nameless ghost is a good friend to prank Gravity Falls with!

She's certainly not a woman of science but she seems to have a pretty friendly relationship with some of the local cryptids, so maybe she can be of some help to his studies? Maybe they're both in desperate need of some human interactions??
Maybe she ends up being everything he needs to stroke his ego. She's got a bit of a wild streak, but it's nothing that can't be fixed.Hopefully nobody shows up 30 chapters in and basically saves her from a deteriorating mad man and his little demon side-piece

Summary
Gravity Falls is the perfect place to disappear. It’s barely on any maps and with a town this small, there isn’t much going on, which is perfect. You want normal, quiet, ordinary.
Stan and Ford Pines are about as far from that as it gets. When they discover what you’re so desperately trying to forget, there are only two options: leave town or face this head on. Sadly, you’ve got a property cheap enough and a job as the new librarian that pays well enough to force you to stay.
Who could’ve known that that would lead to falling in love with these insufferable men? At least you don’t have to confront those feelings, seeing how you like both of them and there is no chance in hell they each feel the same about you. It’s not like they’ll decide to learn how to share and you’re the perfect test subject…
