The Asset paused, chewing on the end of the pencil. There would be no coming back from this. It was suicide, most likely. But it was really Bucky’s life. He hadn’t been born in captivity; he could do it. He could run. Whatever happened, it would be better for him than this.
So the Asset carefully signed Steve’s name at the bottom of the note.

“I didn’t lose my arm, Sam,”
An edge crept into Bucky’s voice. He picked a file from right next to the lamp and passed it to Sam.
“Read it.”

"Sam was the second one to scream. If asked later, he would probably say it was more of a yelp. A yelp of discomfort at being woken by a tiny ghost at circa three in the morning. In fact, it was not a yelp.

“I was downstairs and Bucky was making this noise,”
Sam waited a beat.
“What, uh, what sort of noise?”
“I dunno, it was like he was crying, but his eyes were closed and his mouth was closed too so it sounded kind of weird. He sounded, it wasn’t like normal crying. I think something’s wrong. I thought maybe we should call an ambulance. He’s,”
Cassidy squeezed Bunny, pressing Bunny’s yellow crochet head against his mouth.
“Hey, it’s OK,” Sam said, sitting up.
“You know Bucky’s, well, Bucky has been hurt,”"
Bucky has a nightmare on the Wilson family couch. They deal with it.

"Sam imagined the reunion. Sam imagined that face. The Senate archivist had found them one and only one picture of Karpov. It was from the Insight Committee Report. It was a picture of Vasily Karpov holding a Koala on his family vacation to Australia, circa 1971. That was before he divorced his wife after she refused to pull their children out of school mid-year to move to Siberia, the archivist had told them with the absolute glee of someone who loves their job.
Karpov looked a lot like Sam’s grade seven English teacher. To Sam. God knew what Bucky saw when he looked at that face. God knew what Bucky’s poor heart would do seeing it in person.
Sam hoped for the best."
Sam and Bucky track down an old Hydra handler. Then Sam pulls a Sam and makes Bucky talk about it.

Bucky thought for a minute.

A.J. choked.
“I thought I’d throw it in. Don’t want it going to waste, you know,”
“A cucumber?”
“Well, people put zucchini in muffins. Cucumber’s kinda like zucchini. . .”
“Where did you find this recipe?” A.J. asked.
“I made it up.”
Sam was starting to feel kind of sorry for A.J. now.
When they pass a McDonald's on the way home from the airport, A.J. spontaneously becomes starved. Thank goodness Bucky has snacks for sharing.

“I hope I’m crazy,” Bucky shot back. Sam’s smile wilted.
“Either Hydra made me crazy or I’m a monster, Sam. Rather be crazy,”
“You’re not a monster either. I know that.”
“Yeah? You don’t know. I haven’t told you everything. You don’t know what he did, Sam, you don’t know what I did, what I see myself doing every night when I close my eyes, Sam, it’s, it’s awful. It makes me sick, God, I,-”
Bucky rubbed at his eyes with his thumb and forefinger.“You’re a good person.” Sam said.
Bucky just laughed at that. Just laughed.
