He didn’t know what he’d do if Sonic didn't show up.
…He didn’t know what he'd do if he did show up, either. His feelings on the hedgehog were quite complex at the moment.

Starts off a little slow, but trust me, the payoff is well worth it. Though this fic does have Elise's relationship with Sonic as a focal point, the main focus is very much on her as a character. The author does an incredible job at taking Elise's world, pre- and post-timeline reset, and fleshing it out with original characters, small things she lost...yet it still feels plausible that many of these things might have happened in canon. Elise's reason for not crying for all those years is also woven in in a natural way. Also, one thing that really got me, was how much Sonic's death was an absolute gut-punch here. His final thought was so, so heartbrea
I plan to expand this later to give a fuller, but still spoiler-free picture, of why I loved this, but the best way I can sum this up is:
This wasn't just amazing as a Sonic x Elise fic, but amazing as a work of literature, period. The description was so immersive, and the worldbuilding brought other stories to shame. I can count on one hand the number of stories, traditionally published or otherwise, that brought me this close to tears, and this one did it.

Dear God. Only 1/3 through the first chapter, and Shadow already feels so delightfully in character about this whole thing. He decides he wants a wife, and he goes about deciding what she should be like in the most methodical way possible. No awkward fumbling or agonizing over whether he should or shouldn't. I'm going to have to take notes!

That hesitant admittance alone made Sonic feel like he was on cloud nine, for some reason.

After the explosion, Dr Robotnik learnt three things in quick succession:
1. A sufficiently large detonation combined with a sufficiently large amount of Chaos Energy creates a wormhole through which one can travel (or be sucked at the last second) to a parallel universe relatively safely.
2. Earth seemed to stay pretty consistent across most universes.
3. It appeared that, after a life of self-imposed seclusion in the manner of a gizmo-ridden, super-genius, hermetic monk, when it came down to brass tacks, Dr Robotnik was hard-pushed to tell the difference between most Earths.Dr Robotnik jumps through universes to try and get back home, confronting his feelings for Agent Stone along the way.

This made me tear up. Heartbreaking, the sacrifices Rodimus makes to try to repay his debt to others, and it's still never enough.
Continuity note: The category the author chose was G1, and it appears to take place in a canon divergent version of that universe, drawing some inspiration from IDW 1.

Stone tilted his head, the light reflecting off his mirrored sunglasses. “Well how ‘bout that…you do know our names…”
His fingers flexed, electricity flashing off of him. Not green, like when Robotnik went super, but gold, contrasting the black of his suit.
“I have to try.” He said, barely above whisper. He sounded… like his soul had been ripped out, shattered and forced back in.
