It’s a poor pretense, stepping out onto the terrace to get some air. It’s a poor pretense, but it works, because Julian follows him outside not five minutes later. He looks handsome in his abominable Starfleet dress whites, tugging at the bottom of his jacket, a touch of silver hair at his temples. He moves differently now, a kind of surety in his long limbs that didn’t exist before.

When Bashir is kidnapped by the Dominion he is not sent to Internment Camp 371. Instead he is taken to be a candidate for the new Founder project: 'Project Companion'.
The successful candidate will be used as a template to create a line of clones purpose-built to sexually satisfy the new 'Alpha' Jem'Hadar after battle.
But first they have to test his suitability.

Although, Bashir often wondered later, if this had been planned, for much longer. If the trap in which he had now become so hopelessly ensnared had been set months before. Slowly closing around him for longer than he knew. Perhaps the whole idea behind sharing book recommendations had been building to this. A long game, when Garak said, “Doctor, please, would you explain something to me?”
An appeal to intellectual vanity. And Bashir can’t resist that. Can he?
“Of course, Garak,” he says, “Anything for a friend.”
