Enid gasped, scrambling to her feet, having been on her knees for whatever reason, knelt like she was praying to a merciful statue for mercy rather than a friend. Wednesday raised a brow at this show, finding it mildly amusing. She wondered if Nevermore had already begun constructing some sort of memorial in her honor. She hoped it was a statue this time. The kind that towered over a grave in her grandmama’s graveyards. This time, she prayed it wasn’t smiling horribly like the last gift she received from the school. If it was, she’d blow that one up far worse than the painting she burned.
“I thought you were dead!”
“I know. I’m crushed as well,” Wednesday muttered with a smile. “I’m surprised they surrounded me in white. I told mother I preferred black for this occasion."

“I dreamt about it.” Agnes replied, lips curling upward. “However, that won’t get you the desired effect.”
The desired effect in question was apparently proving that Enid was somehow jealous.
“Hand.”
The muscles in Wednesday’s jaw clenched. “Sleeve.”
“Hold my hand, Wednesday.” Agnes repeated, “Do you want to prove my hypothesis or not?”
“Pinky.”
“Fine.”

She watches as Enid hesitates, then finally toes off her shoes and crawls onto the bed. The mattress dips under her weight. She doesn’t press against Wednesday at first. She just sits there, close enough that their shoulders brush.
It’s strange, having her this near without the usual flurry of noise and motion. Warmth radiates off her, steady and unyielding. It seeps through the hospital gown and into Wednesday’s skin.
Enid exhales, slower this time, the fight in her shoulders loosening. “You scared me so bad.”
“I’ll try not to do it again,” Wednesday says, though she knows her tone makes it sound less like a promise and more like a reluctant compromise.
