The most awkward thing about it all is the stupid Get Out smeared across the wall in bioluminescent garbage, along the far wall across from the entryway, prominent in its placement. Handprints are peppered beneath it, dragged down as if through blood. If it wasn’t so overstated, so fucking cliche, maybe it’d make his stomach turn—or maybe it wouldn’t. It’s hard to tell these days, the things that hit his hindbrain versus the things that don’t.
“This,” Nicholas says, gesturing at the wall, “is embarrassing for the both of us.”
The thing haunting the house doesn’t have a name that he knows, and Meryl hasn’t given one if she’s privy to the information. So it’s just the Haunt, and Nicholas, and the desert that’s hiding them both.
The Haunt drags a hand-shaped force through the faintly glowing text, spiteful in its delivery. Underneath it, something else begins to come alive, the letters bigger, the strokes broader, two fingers wide instead of one.
Get. Out. Underlined for emphasis. Circled to make a point. And beside it, a frowning face with angry eyebrows—a child’s threat.

“You’ll know when it happens,” Vash says, and now he turns his head, showing his profile. Without the protection of his glasses, tucked into the collar of his jacket, his eyes flash white in the light. Like an animal, Nicholas thinks. Like something unknowable, untameable, no matter how close one’s willing to get.
But Nicholas has never been afraid of getting bit. He shifts on his rocky perch, chewing the lollipop stick long gone soggy between his teeth. “Can you at least tell me what to watch for?”
Vash hums, turning around fully, half a smile quirking the left side of his mouth, forming a dimple Nicholas wants to press his thumb into.
“Teeth.”

Vash holds himself to a standard he doesn’t hold others to. Vash pushes himself faster and harder than he pushes Wolfwood, and doesn’t understand why Wolfwood gets angry when Vash jumps in front of a bullet clearly aimed at Wolfwood and runs himself ragged until he collapses in the sand.
“You have the self-preservation of a fucking lemming,” Wolfwood snaps as he winds a bandage around Vash’s scarred torso. “Can you at least pretend to look out for yourself?”

Vash has a soulmark that changes every few decades, shifting like smoke to a new form. It is nothing as simple as a name (like a human would have), and maybe it’s a blessing he never meets them. It settles into different silhouettes—wolf, raven, eagle—but it never burns to signal he has actually met the person. Until it does. And then he really, really wishes it never had.
Wolfwood knows from the moment the name appears on his wrist that he’s fucked, because he has heard of the notorious outlaw (who hasn’t?), and on this entire planet, there is probably only one Vash. Then he gets the assignment to look after him, and he knows he is really, really fucked.

With scars on his arms, plus a craving for something inhuman, Tommy Innit tries to keep himself alive… well as alive as a zombie can be. But hey, being undead has its perks.

"I'm not asking for money," Wolfwood says. He presses in closer, applying more pressure on Vash’s thigh. Pushing himself into his vicinity, their chests touching, lips only a hairsbreadth apart. "Though, I think you already knew that."
Vash’s blue eyes, appearing a shade darker as his pupils blow out, fall to Wolfwood’s lips.
"I'm not sure I know what you mean."
"You like my touch, Vash," Wolfwood says, "No, you're starved for it."
Or /// Vash is the sun, and Wolfwood can't help but want to feel his warmth even if he gets burned in the process.
