At the name and the eyes accompanying it, Jim felt like he had been punched in the gut, all breath knocked out of him.
Those familiar eyes looked at him, unrecognising.
The softest brown infused with specks of green, as if they held the new spring growth inside. They were the forest floor and the gentle flowers, somewhere to rest and breathe. They were Jim’s childhood. Late night talks and Chinese take away in secret.

After weeks of boredom, Jim was basically bouncing off the walls of the Enterprise. Finally they get a mission and suddenly he is faced with a ghost from his past. Someone who had left him 15 years ago, someone who was supposed to look after him and protect him, someone he had missed with every fibre of his being for years.

Jim smiled a little, happy to be surrounded by the only family he had. His gaze found Spock's, and an understanding passed between the pair. He turned back to the two flags sitting on the table. "Chris saved me, you know." He paused, but no one said anything. Jim snorted lightly. "In that bar, I was going nowhere and fast. I was just tired of life, and living. If it hadn't been for Chris, I probably would have ended up killing myself in some way, on purpose or accidentally, before I got to my twenty-fifth birthday."

Chapter 7 : Haunted
The huge grey monument stood in the very center, on top of what was once a platform- more of a round stage, really- used for public speeches. It was rectangular in shape, and reached about twenty feet high. Carved into the stone were names about an inch high written in cursive. Winding around the base of the pillar were the words: The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living. Uhura thought it was sadly poetic. She looked up and up and up at the tall monument, and felt queasy as she realized exactly how many names were carved into the stone.

James T. Kirk was a survivor. And he wasn’t just saying that to seem cool.
Jim had been surviving horrible things when he wasn’t even a minute old. He survived Frank with his stench and swinging limbs. He and his kids survived Tarsus and Kodos and all the nightmares and ghosts that brought. He had survived Nero and had even saved a few others too.
Jim was an expert in survival and had known from a young age that surviving meant sacrifice. It meant doing whatever it took to ensure that Jim could still stand up even if his muscles were aching and he had blood in his mouth.
Jim did what he needed to.
Because he didn’t believe in no win scenarios.
