Summary
Bardock and Gine meet young, raised by the same mother and growing up with a bond that feels more like siblings than lovers. On Planet Vegeta, though, emotions are inconvenient things, and attachments are discouraged in favor of strength, duty, and survival.
While Bardock focuses on becoming the best soldier his low-class division can produce, Gine quietly endures her role in society, passing through mating seasons as a reject, year after year, learning not to hope for much. Life moves on, battles are fought, and eventually Bardock is forced to return home with an obligation he can no longer avoid: choosing a mating partner.
Gine is the easiest choice.
She is also the most complicated one.What begins as a practical decision slowly turns into something far more dangerous on Planet Vegeta: a bond neither of them planned, named, or were ever meant to have.
This is a companion story set in the Burning Season universe, which also includes Matched to Burn. It can be read as a prequel, but neither story is required to understand the other. They share the same universe, though, so the same rules apply.

Tim’s stomach drops. His gaze snags on the shifting symbols crawling over the magic user’s arms, glowing a sickly, poisonous red. He thrashes, fury sparking even as the world starts to blur. Because if anyone was going to chain Damian down, it sure as hell wasn’t going to be this freak. Only he gets to put up with the brat. Only he gets to mess with him.
The magic circles flare. And before everything goes black, Tim has one final thought:
He really, really fucking hates magic.
Or, Tim and Damian are both forced into a spell in which they cannot leave each other’s side. It goes swimmingly, as you can imagine.

Damian knows, with terrible certainty, that he wasn’t one of them.
He can picture it all too easily: a flicker of Grayson’s smile, the knit of Drake’s concentrated brow, the old man’s trembling hands, even the sharp snark of Todd. But never him. He doesn’t fit anywhere in those final recollections, doesn’t belong in that gallery of love and legacy.
It shouldn’t matter. It really shouldn’t. He tells himself he’s above it. He’s stronger, colder, trained not to care about what the dead remember. But the words sound hollow even inside his head. And still—still—he wants to ask.
The question curls up in his throat like a child hiding from punishment. Did you think of me? Even once?
Or perhaps, in some gentler world, Damian might have found that the body remembers healing more faithfully than it does pain.

Mother had warned him many times of the danger that surrounded Gotham. Damian should've taken her warnings more seriously he thinks distantly.
He watches silently as Batman beats a man up ruthlessly. The man getting beat up was selling drugs but the amount of violence Batman was using made Damian queasy.
Batman takes a step away from the man, making no moves to help him. Instead he looks up and right at Damian who should've gone undetected. The man behind the cowl is staring directly at him.
TLDR; Damian meets the morally ambiguous bat family.

By Wednesday noon the forced bonding exercise with his sort-of-estranged sort-of-brother had evolved into inadvertent dimensional travel.
And there was something very, very wrong with this Gotham.

Jon couldn’t imagine a life without getting to play or run around in the backyard. Jon couldn’t imagine a life without his friends.
“Not even Roblox, buddy,” his dad had replied.
What a sad life Damian must have.
Or: Bruce wants Damian to have a normal childhood and to stop maiming people so he asks Clark to introduce him to Jon. This solves one issue and creates a lot more.
