Hour seven of the third trial, Sam knows he’s going to die. His limbs felt like a thousand pounds, recording one final voice message for Dean. Listening to those words gave Dean closure, but the emptiness he felt in his soul afterwards made him wish he weighed a thousand pounds. He’d carry the world like Atlas if he knew Sam would be walking on it, but Sam would never walk into the room again. Sam lived on a cassette tape with cracked edges, the cassette tape Dean listened to at 3am when he just needed to know that he needed to live on.

Sam Winchester dragged the Devil, himself, his half brother, and Michael into the cage following the events of the graveyard. Things go differently than expected. Lucifer takes all of his rage out on Sam, that doesn't change. However Michael's time in the cage gives him time to reflect on what's important. He stands guard over Adam, watching Lucifer's wrath; one day he snaps and can't take it any more. Michael then finds his humanity again.

After a Kitsune hunt brings up old memories, the stitches and duct tape that the Winchester brothers used to repair their brotherly bond over the years become more apparent. In a moment of weakness and arguing over freedom of choice. Ergoth and Belphagor make their move, along with Ergoth talking to Sam and planting what had seemed to be the first seed; it seems the two demons are better than expected at this new game. Throughout the days, planting seeds throughout the story in order to guide the Winchester brothers in the direction that they need to go. The direction that will put Sam in his rightful place on the throne.
