She scratches self-consciously at her scalp. “When do you think, dude?”
She’s gross. Travelling is dirty and sweaty and half the time they’re sleeping on the ground. More than once, she’s found leaves in her hair in the morning. She wants a hot shower like she hasn’t wanted anything in years.

He doesn’t know what made him say it. She’d just looked so… surprised by the bug on her face.
“You’re full of shit,” she whispers, only sounding half sure of it.
“You’re already some kind of weird mutant,” he says, the first time he’s brought up her immunity since they left Bill and Frank’s. “You really wanna catch butterfly disease too?”

Much like the other day, Ellie ends up sitting on the porch steps. Joel’s back even quicker this time. Almost like he’d left his first aid supplies sitting out and ready to attend as needed.
More cleaning, this one hurts less. More gel liquid, this time rubbed in a bit better. And more bandaids, these ones something other than plain, boring beige. Not princesses either, usually the first thing adults reached for when they mixed the two factors of Little Girl and Injured together.
Nope. This guy has dinosaur bandaids.
“Dude, I fucking love dinos!”
Joel’s head swivels up, eyes going from her carefully patched up elbow to meet Ellie’s gaze. She wants to ask him how he knew. She wants to ask to see the rest of the designs in the box. She wants to tell him all of the other things she loves.
“S’pose I picked right then,” he says, almost like he’d been standing in the aisle, contemplating what exactly that might be.
“You did,” is how Ellie answers him, not bothering with a thank you.

Joel’s plumb out of luck, it seems, because running after the dog is the little girl. She’s out of breath, still halfway laughing, and for a few seconds she doesn’t notice him. In those seconds, her face is wide open in a grin, dark hair wild and posture loose. She can’t be more than thirteen, maybe a small fourteen, and she’s clumsy in the way teenagers are right after a growth spurt. There’s a knife in Joel’s chest, the one that’s been there for twenty years, and it twists.
(or, joel accidentally gets a dog. apparently, the dog comes with a mouthy fourteen-year-old kid, and maybe also a reason for living again.)

“It’s not for you.”
That shuts off her stream of words at once. He resists the urge to blink back at her in surprise. He hadn’t known he was going to say that until he said it. Seeing the way her shoulders have lost some of their tension, though, he knows at once that it was the right call. It galls him a bit, what he’s about to say, twenty years of survival making him reticent to admit any weakness.
But fourteen years before that has him speaking anyway.
Ellie won’t admit her weaknesses. That’s fine. She’s clearly been knocked over hard by that fucking place. He can take the fall for this one, if that’s what it takes to get her somewhere safe, a place where he can tend her properly, can tuck her away in a soft bed in a safe town, can get some meat back on her bones.
Can–please God–get some life back in her eyes.

The room is illuminated by a flash of lightning for a split second, and it’s enough for Joel to see that Ellie isn’t in her spot on top of flat cushions against the wall.
“Shit,” he mutters, scrambling upright and unholstering his pistol. There’s a loud rumble of thunder again, and Joel spares a second to wonder if she’s the type of kid who gets scared by storms.
Sarah had been like that, spring storms in Texas sending her scurrying to his room until she was at least ten. Even after that, when she’d stayed in her own room, he would go in to check on her and more often than not find her curled in a ball. He had never known why, since it wasn’t like they’d had particularly terrible storms when she was real little. She seemed to have been born with an innate fear of them, and no amount of reassurances or it's just angels bowling could make her relax.
