Summary
But Max is too late. He’s begged her to help him, and she didn’t, and now she’s too late. Billy can feel the monster pushing forward in his head, and he realises that it’s now or never, and no one’s coming. But Billy refuses to murder his own sister, or her friends.
“Max, please.” Everything hurts so bad now that he’s started twitching, his left leg spasming. He’s not sure if that’s him begging, or if it’s the monster.
All Max says is, “It’s gonna be okay. We want to help you. We want to help you.”
It’s all up to Billy now.
So he does the only thing he can think of, desperate as he is.

Summary
Turned out being impaled repeatedly by a flesh monster wasn’t enough to take Billy Hargrove out of the game fully. It did, in some part make the game a little harder, but he was still playing despite it all.
Bouncing the basketball slowly against the back patio, Billy let his gaze travel to the woods surrounding the cluttered little home. He’d been surprised as all Hell when Joyce Byers had been the one to take him from the hospital once all the scientists and doctors had finished prodding him, and discharged him. His father and Susan had visited only once that whole three months he’d been stuck in the hospital bed. He’d almost feared there would have been no one there when they’d finally released him. He didn’t want to think about how stupid he must have looked, fighting back tears when Joyce and her little family had claimed him as their own. He didn’t deserve it. Didn’t deserve them.
A cramp ran up the length of his arm, causing him to falter in his dribble. The ball bounced away, rolling towards the back door.

Billy broke things too. He broke people. The brutalized teen across the lunch room was proof to Billy what he’d become. There was a difference between being an asshole and being his father. The realization set Billy’s stomach lurching.

“I’ve been around enough girls to recognize the signs. It’s not that big of a deal. I’ve got some tampons in the glove compartment if you want them.”
“I...” Max turned away from him. She sat up straight, holding herself tight. “I haven’t… this is… I’ve never...”
“This is the first time?” Oh, Billy did not sign up for this.

She found them in his sock drawer, buried deep under bunched-up socks and banknotes tossed haphazardly over the top. She shouldn’t have pried, but she saw her name on one of the letters in Billy’s messy, scrawling script, and she just couldn’t help herself.
The first letter was written on crumpled paper like it had been balled up and unwrapped too many times to count, and the page was now smooth and soft. It was tearstained, and Max ran her fingers over the darkened spots. ‘Little shit’ was crossed out at the top, and it started with Max.

The words that break him are "Maybe you deserve the way your father treats you" and Hopper has never been so angry in his whole fucking life.

What begins as Steve dropping Max off at home turns into him getting talked into meeting her parents and ends with the discovery that Billy isn't just a hard ass piece of shit who hurts anyone and everyone who comes into his path, and that the maybe the bruises on his body and the scowl on his lips comes from someone who should be protecting him instead of hurting him.
Who the hell could have predicted that this was how today was going to go?
