Summary
Dragon's Edge begins with six riders, five dragons, and an island full of possibilities.
While Hiccup and his friends struggle with construction projects, supply shortages, and the challenge of turning a lonely outpost into a home, they remain blissfully unaware of the dangers gathering beyond the horizon.
They don't know it yet, but while Dragon's Edge rises from timber and stone, others are beginning to take notice of the dragons filling the skies above the archipelago.
For now, the greatest threat facing Dragon's Edge is obviously a lack of soap, an overabundance of fish, and whatever the twins are doing.

Take Hiccup and Astrid and throw them into a world where he is merman from under the sea, she is the princess of Berk. They have been told the others are monsters, but surely that can't be true, can it?
Hiccup is different than the other merfolk in his pod and he doesn't know why. He can't swim as fast, his tail cramps and seizes, he can feel the cold at certain depths while the others can't, among other things. Toothless, a water dragon, helps him get around while he finds himself fascinated by humans and their creations...and when he catches sight of a certain blonde princess, his life will never be the same.Bookmarked by Roontoon

And she knew it might have been the seeds of her suspicions, but she wondered if there was more to it. More to the fact that her gaze lingered after him more often, wincing in anticipation as he swam with surprising agility in the crowd of people, trying to find him when pain interrupted her train of thoughts.
Or, a Soulmate Alternative Universe, in which the link between soulmates is pain, and Astrid cannot catch a break, threatening her established school life.

Hiccup shoots down Toothless… later. By that point, he and Astrid have already been roped into an arranged marriage neither of them is fond of. Then Toothless crashes into their lives, Red Death happens, and Hiccup is suddenly the center of all of Berk’s attention… and Astrid’s. Part of him thinks he likes it. The other part… says something’s wrong.

"I'm sure my cosmic balance can cope." Ruff replied, pulling up shockingly badly into one of the few free spaces left in the carpark. Astrid could see the ugly red truck she knew belonged to Snotlout two rows over, practically glowing.
Astrid followed Ruff out of the car, shutting the door perhaps more forcefully than necessary. "You're sure we can't just ditch this and egg Snotlout’s truck? It'd be about a thousand times more fun.”
Ruff knocked their shoulders together, leaning her weight against Astrid. "Just give it a go. If you really hate it, I'll sneak us out the chem room window and we can find something to cover Snotlout’s car with.”or - astrid does not want to go to her high school's reunion, the hot guy at her table (who she has no memory of) only makes it slightly less unbearable

Basically, Hiccup and Toothless don't become best buds and Hiccup becomes a recluse blacksmith. He and Stoick grow apart more than they already have and the gang overlook him because he stops trying to help and in turn doesn't cause anymore issues around Berk. There will be a time skip of a few years, possible to when Stoick starts to train Hiccup to be Chief and everyone starts to recognize that he is actually very smart and works really hard in the Forge.

As if -he-, who had run away from Berk, had any kind of moral ground to comment on her behavior as an heir.
- Stoick is pretty desperate.
He turned to her, a confused look stamped on his face.
- My father desperate? Stoick?
- Yes. Stoick. Berk is in Drago’s sights.---
Hiccup never wanted the chieftainship and always had a thirst for knowledge. Toothless gave him wings to achieve everything he had always wanted. When he fled Berk, he never imagined he would end up involved in a war of hunters, and that this war would bring him back to Berk more than five years later.
Not as Hiccup, but as the living legend of the Dragon Master, the one responsible for putting an end to the attacks on the islands of the archipelago.
