Summary
When Elena finally turned around, she found him leaning against the wall near the entrance, watching her through half-lowered lashes. Elena ignored the feeling his gaze stirred in her. Was it apprehension, or anticipation? Sometimes, with Damon, she wasn't entirely sure there was a difference.
"Make yourself at home," she said, gesturing toward the sofa as she turned toward the kitchen to make herself some tea.
While the water heated, she added, "I'd offer you something to drink, but I don't have any dark magic wine."
Damon's eyes widened for an instant at the words, and then a cold half-smile appeared on his face.
"I can think of a few other things I'd be interested in drinking," he said, his voice a silky murmur. "If you're offering."
As she reached into the cabinet for the tea, Elena smiled despite herself. This was more like the Damon she remembered. They had played this game countless times before, and it was infinitely easier than the silence.
"I'd let you bite me if you let me kiss you first."

Summary
" Matt shakes his head. “No,” he says, but the adrenaline in the lack of his throat says otherwise. He’s not scared, he’s fucking petrified, because this creature, with his beautiful face and his beautiful eyes is terrifyingly engulfing, overwhelming, appealing.
“And if I tried to drown you?” Matt visibly flinches, and Mello laughs, as chilling as the ocean’s breeze. “Lighten up, Matt, love, I wouldn’t do that to you. "

Matt is in possession of a pretty ordinary life. Part-time job and rainy weather and university attendance. A square-shaped existence which he putters around the edges of, holding an umbrella. Lukewarm takeaways.
Sometimes, he turns into a dog.

Summary
“Um… hello?” Mello said carefully, his English stiff and nervous. “I um. I’m Mello.”
When there was no answer, Mello took a cautious step closer. “You like dogs?”
The other boy hissed—an actual hiss—and a nearby husky barked sharply, echoing his warning. Mello stumbled back, startled. The boy’s lips twitched into something that wasn’t quite a snarl but still felt menacing.
“Okay! Okay, I’ll go!” Mello said, raising his hands. “Peace! Calm!”
He turned to retreat, and that movement triggered the pack instinct. A low growl rippled through the dogs. The boy lunged to quiet them, but Mello panicked, stepping accidentally on the closest one’s paw. When the dog let out a yelped cry, the red-haired boy vaulted in his direction and grabbed wildly at Mello’s sleeve. Teeth sank into his forearm, not deep enough to break skin, but hard enough to sting. Mello cried out, half from pain and half from shock. The wild boy’s eyes showed his fury that Mello had hurt one of his friends. Then, just as suddenly as he’d attacked, he let go and backed away, huffing as another dog pressed against his leg like a guardian.
Mello clutched his arm. “You bit me!”

The fear is another vital aspect of it, fear of the government, fear of the police and rebuttal and punishment. It's what has kept Light Yagami in power for the past five years.
