Summary
The six of them just saved the planet from an alien invasion and a megalomaniacal dictator with mind-controlling magical powers. Thor’s a god, Steve is an enhanced super soldier, Bruce has serious anger management problems, Agents Romanoff and Barton kill people for a living, and Tony is… well, he’s Tony Stark. He’s the Iron Man, he’s an eccentric billionaire genius, he’s famous (sometimes for bad reasons, like that cock-up with the cleaning robot). And he flew an active nuclear warhead through a portal into outer space, which definitely counts for something. In short, they are pretty much the most amazing thing in the world right about now.
And yet he thinks that maybe this is the moment that defines them as a team – the one where Barton has a goddamn seizure in the shawarma joint and the rest of them panic and run around like headless chickens.

Summary
“I should’ve left a long time ago. But I couldn’t bear to leave you behind.”
Because Billy knew what to do when you couldn’t ask. Billy recognized it in your eyes, read it in the motions of your flailing hand, the urgent grasping at air. He knows you well and he knows what to do now too, as he studies your grim eyes and traces his hand along the contours of your body.
“He won’t kill you,” Billy promises with more certainty this time, as he realizes what must be done.
-- or --
You're Mrs. Hargrove and maybe it breaks your heart, maybe it rips it into teeny tiny pieces, but something must be done about your husband. And your son is your truest, most trusted confident.

Summary
Susan’s smile fades slightly and she only bobs her head before ducking out of his room. Couple days go by and Billy doesn’t bring it up again. He’s home most of the time right now. Doesn’t leave much beyond his appointments and taking walks with Max just to get out of the house. He isn’t cleared to drive yet and while he’s never been one to follow the rules, he genuinely doesn’t even feel up to driving. Admitting that is a bitter pill to swallow. Billy’s swallowing a lot of bitter pills these days.
Being home so much, he wants to think he’d hear it if Neil started really going at Susan.
-- or --
Billy begrudgingly (or not) grows closer to Susan during his recovery in the aftermath of Starcourt. When Neil starts putting hands on her, he decides to stand up to yet another monster.

Summary
The next several weeks are moderately more annoying and less graceful. Neil spends them drinking whiskey more and hitting Billy less. Billy spends them snorting coke with the pain meds he chases down with booze and gazing longingly at the sword he’d mounted on his wall over the summer.
It’s a replica of a viking sword. Billy bought it just because he thought it looked badass, the solid bronze pommel and guard, neat markings carved into the handle. Now that they’re learning about vikings in school, he keeps thinking about doing something more with it. He keeps thinking about wielding it.
Though Billy would never admit he pays attention in his history class, viking stuff is pretty cool.
-- or --
Left alone with his father, Billy puts viking lore to the test.

Summary
“What did I do to deserve this?”
“Don’t play dumb, Susan, you know exactly what you did,” Neil accuses, voice like ice.
She genuinely doesn’t.
There’s no point in arguing, never is. Susan sinks her teeth into her lip and dumps her ruined flowers into the yard waste bag. She doesn’t think the day could get worse. And then, as Susan tugs the bag to the curb, she spies Max watching from the kitchen window and realizes her daughter had seen everything.
It wouldn’t be the worst thing Max has seen in their house. Knowing this only twists the knife. Susan meets her daughter’s gaze for just a heartbeat, then bows her head in shame.
-- or --
Susan's sense of self crumbs in the wake of her husband's escalating violence and intensifying control tactics. She takes the first steps toward plotting her escape, finding an ally in Joyce Byers. Max, meanwhile develops a surprise interest in javelin throwing. Susan encourages her to pursue it despite the expense, if only to keep her daughter out of the house and away from the danger as much as possible.

Summary
The last day of senior year hadn’t been spent in school but instead smoking out by the quarry. Billy had attended graduation the Saturday before and hadn’t needed to go back to that cage for the last week. He lied to his father about going but he would never find out about him skipping because he always dropped off and picked up Max on time. There was finally freedom in his veins for the first time in months. Because at the end of the summer he was heading back to California for college and would never have to see this town or fake family again. Or at least, that’s what should have happened.

“So,” Heather says, in between bites of her salad. “There’s a party at Brimborn on Saturday.”
Billy frowns. “The fuck is Brimborn?”
It’s times like these that Heather’s reminded that Billy hasn’t lived in Hawkins his whole life. He’s only been here for about eight months, but he’d made his place in her friend group so perfectly it feels like he’s always been here.

But no matter what, Billy is going to fix things with his sister, even if it's the last thing he does.

Summary
The truth is that, after being on the verge of death so many times, facing evil creatures taken out straight from your worst nightmares, you tend not to care so much about the same kind of evil in people; not about the all-consuming darkness of their soul trying to dig its claws into your heart, nor the freezing cold atmosphere surrounding them, your instinct telling you to bolt, to just get out, or you’ll maybe never get the chance to ever again. You tend to look the other way as they keep roaming the earth, the venom of their heart proliferating and poisoning your body, your mind, slowly, viciously spreading to everything that ever mattered to you; because you know you survived other kinds of monsters that openly tried to kill you. Because staying alive was the priority, still is, and you know there’s always something worse, something bigger, lurking out in the darkness and ready to swoop down on you and the ones you love.
When facing such horrors, you tend to forget that other kinds of monsters exist.
Max never got the luxury to forget.

Summary
Billy’s face twitches, the slight furrow of his brow the only betrayal of confusion in an otherwise slack expression. Max grips the kitchen table. She’s confused too. It’s almost scarier being confused, like what she doesn’t know might be even worse than what she thought she did.
And then it is.

Summary
“Is he dead?” Max squawks, somewhere between stricken and relieved, eyes bugging.
The chief crouches to feel for a pulse and Susan goes rigid beside Billy.
“He’s mad at me,” she whispers so quietly he believes he’s the only one who hears. She’s quaking scared and Billy takes a step in front of her, putting himself between her and the cop.
“Yeah, Max, he’s dead,” he declares before he can change his mind, “I killed him.”
The chief’s head snaps up. Max inhales sharply, eyelids fluttering fast. Susan’s fingers clench so tight he feels her nails biting crescents into his skin.
The chief stands up, measuring Billy and Susan with an investigative gaze. Billy knows what he’s seeing. He’s seeing the blood splatter painted all over Susan’s clothes. He’s seeing the broken off tenderizer head, the bloodied and splintered wooden handle close by. He’s seeing Susan’s hands stained in red around Billy’s arm and the way Billy holds himself in front of her, guarding her from The Authority and the calculating eyes of The Authority that would identify even more of Neil’s blood splattered on her if he were to step aside.

Summary
Trinity Santos doesn’t panic. She’s trained herself out of it.
So when her roommate, Dr. Dennis Whitaker, calls out sick with what seems like a lingering flu, she sends a sarcastic text—drink fluids, skull emoji—and goes back to work. She doesn’t dwell on the fact that he never replies. She definitely doesn’t admit that it worries her.
But when Trinity comes home to a deep, wet cough she recognizes instantly, a fever that won’t break, and Dennis drifting in and out of memories of the Nebraska farm where he grew up, denial stops being an option. The night spirals into an emergency that pulls them into The Pitt’s trauma bay—and into full view of colleagues who have never seen Trinity unguarded.
As Dennis’s condition deteriorates toward intubation, Trinity’s armor finally cracks. In a moment of raw vulnerability, she reveals the trauma that shaped her and the truth of what Dennis has become to her: not just a roommate, not just a friend, but her only family and her only safe place.
A character-driven hurt/comfort fic about illness, trauma, found family, and the terrifying intimacy of caring for the one person you can’t afford to lose.Bookmarked by SemTeslaGirl
