Summary
After her many years in space, the Hail Mary has finally made it to Erid. But her passengers still have a long road ahead of them.
Grace, at death's door, has to go back into a coma to give the Eridians more time to synthetize his nutrients. He makes Rocky promise to take care of himself too, for his weakened joints and oxyde-filled vents. They'll be all better soon, the both of them.
But the nanny-bot has a program to follow. When Grace's vitals finally start improving enough for him to be woken up, there's a particular medicine it has to give to him.
Or: Grace gets a second dose of amnesia drugs right after getting to Erid.

A magnetic event of some kind has temporarily knocked out most electronics onboard and forced Rocky into a coma. Grace now has to navigate first contact with Erid alone, with no software to translate his words to the Eridians at the space elevator until Mary can run diagnostics on everything. But he’s not panicking! He can still speak (simplified, childish) Standard Equatorial Ran, so this should still be salvageable. Sure, he doesn't sound that great, but they can understand him. Right?
The alien child believes the engineer is its mate, and the ships logs have records of the crimes committed. The situation is dire. Immediate intervention is needed.

I mean, it’s a lot, right? I’ve just remembered that I’m on a spaceship, my planet is dying, and I’m about to die in an attempt to save it. I’ve just remembered who I am, for goodness’ sake. And now I’m wrestling with new questions, like whether I’m really the kind of guy who sleeps with his boss, knocks her up, and promptly peaces out to Tau Ceti. You know, as one does.
Just when Grace is starting to piece together what he's doing on the Hail Mary, he finds a note from Stratt that upends everything again.
Or: Leading up to the launch, Grace and Stratt make slightly different choices, and carry slightly different consequences to the ends of the earth and beyond the stars.

It’s its own special kind of torture that what he’s saying is actually interesting. I try my hardest to listen, to file it away in the sciencey part of my brain where it slid to the very back of my awareness, but Rocky has made a point to sit right there, the thrilling vibration of his voice drawing me to full hardness.
“Your veins are like that,” he tells me, either oblivious or indifferent to the way I’m trembling beneath him. Seeing as he’s talking about my insides, though, I really doubt he doesn’t know. “Many possible paths. Some end early. Some loop around without going far. Some branch off many times to span great distance.”
If I can feel my heart in my throat, I wonder how loud it must be for him.

After 27 years, Earth's Hail Mary comes through. The world has been forever changed, and billions died because of the Astrophage crisis, but space agencies have done their best to survive and keep their telescopes pointing to Tau Ceti. After the beetles are spotted, Eva Stratt forces her way into the CSA office to learn what the Hail Mary crew discovered. Downloading the data is slow and happens in pieces, so the team has to try piecing together what happened out in the Tau Ceti system.
Eva Stratt is faced with the reality of what she did to Grace, watching him deal with the situation she put him in, leading to a complex mix of emotions. Part of her wishes things could have been different. But she knows that wishing on a star is useless.
