Wilbur hums, low and tuneless, before his fingers find the chords. It’s not a sad song, but Techno doesn’t mind. He’s heard it thousands of times before.
“Blackbird singing in the dead of night // take these broken wings and learn to fly,” Wilbur’s voice is… he’s rushing the words a little—not like he doesn’t want to sing. That’s his style, kinda. Techno can’t describe his voice, despite knowing him since youth. Wil’s voice is frayed at the edges, sweet and chewy.Techno leans back on his elbows, watching the first stars prick through the violet haze. His voices have quietened to the extent Techno can hear the rasp of Wilbur’s calluses against the strings.
When the song ends, Wilbur lays the guitar across his lap and tilts his head. “Again.”
“What do you mean..I’ll choke, then sing—“
Wilbur clicks his tongue. “A request. Something you wanna hear.”
Techno hesitates. The truth sits heavy behind his teeth: just keep playing. Just stay.
“Play whatever,” sounds less desperate.

Jamie collapses at training the day before an away game far from home, running a fever, and somehow this ends up being Roy's problem. And Ted's, when he persuades Roy to take it in shifts. It's both of their problem, though it's a problem for them in different ways.
Ted struggles to keep the feeling of being helpless from sending him too deep into his own head to stay where he's needed. His experience as a parent both helps and doesn't.
As for Roy, hating Jamie was a lot simpler than caring about him is. Taking care of him? Roy doesn't have a clue where he got the idea he was competent enough to do that. Especially when it feels like all he does is mess it up.
