Humans have always had heart flowers. A matching set of flowers that are formed on every baby’s skin in the womb, one blossom over their heart, one blossom on the inside of their right wrist. Some cultures revere them as messages from on high. Others view them scientifically, dating back to when humans were still an emerging species. Most accept that there’s some kind of magic attached to heart flowers and their meanings, some worldwide spell that was cast in prehistory. A very few groups of people attempt to destroy the flowers wherever they bloom, but to willfully harm a flower is said to scar the soul, to call a curse to follow at one’s feet.
The flowers’ meanings are shared across time, across culture, a language all know without being told. Love and pride, pain and fear, a person’s deepest self written across their skin.

It sucked that Tim couldn't trust his family. They had either been his abusers or bystanders, but even when he tried to take himself off their hands, they clung to him like a sticky residue. Trapped, he felt like a mouse beneath a cat's paw, and he knew the only escape would be a clean-cut break with no room for interpretion.
Somehow, they made room for interpretation.
“Bruce,” Tim rasped, his discarded Red Robin suit a thousand pound weight in his hands, clean and ready to go in its case. “You don’t even *like* me.”
The truth dangled between them like a spider’s web clinging to separate walls.To no one’s shock, Batman said nothing. The only sounds in the cave were the shuffling of bats and Tim’s bike rumbling softly at the entrance, waiting patiently for him to make his escape.

Drug overdoses have decreased by twenty two percent in adults and seventy nine percent in minors. Homeless minors are ninety two percent less likely to—”
“Kid,” Jason interrupted. “Enough statistics. What the hell is this about?”
Robin slowly lowered the tablet with his powerpoint presentation and looked up at Red Hood.
“You care about Gotham,” Robin summarised. “Gotham needs Batman. Batman is missing and so is Nightwing. We need you to fill in for Batman.”
“You want me to cover Batman’s patrols?” Jason clarified.
“No,” Robin said. “I want you to be Batman.”
Jason bluescreened.
(Or: Batman and Nightwing mysteriously disappear before Red Hood has even started antagonising them, Robin is desperate, Gotham needs Batman, and Red Hood is Batman-Shaped.)

Bruce doesn’t know what’s wrong with his child, but he’s pretty sure kids aren’t meant to work like this.
From the day he had looked up into the tops of the circus tent and saw a frightened mirror image of a boy who had just experienced the worst day of his life, Bruce had instantly gone into emergency mode.
The Gotham PD had wanted to pass the boy off into the care of the circus. The circus had mumbled underneath their breaths about superstitions, about not having a boy like that with them, about not being able to handle something like Dick. So GCPD, not knowing what to do, had started talking about one of the handful of overburdened boy homes that handles a majority of Gotham’s unlucky orphans.
All the while, the camera lights flash bright and loud, wanting to know everything.
Bruce couldn’t let that happen.
Not then, not ever again.

Bruce is trying his best to protect the city that he loves. He doesn't know how exactly his Robins came to be- they're not fully human, not even at all. All he knows is that he wants to keep them safe.
