To God's chagrin, neither is aware of the other's continued existence.Sick and tired of grief big enough to end a universe, She sends them both on a trip through their old haunts, hoping they'll meet. All is as well and good as possible until something happens to Aziraphale, and a grieving Crowley must unknowingly come to his rescue.
Includes musings on existence, gentle, warm flashbacks, demonic heists of a homosexual nature, God in slippers, asshole Gabriel, tearful reunions, the inherent tenderness of loving someone ever so much, and, through all the sorrow, a very happy ending.

And it highlighted how much he wasn’t the same kind of creature the angel was.
Angels didn’t have these kinds of problems. Only they, demons, had been cursed with them. The last thing he wanted was for Aziraphale to see how deep the curse ran when you were cast out.

Aziraphale blinked as a horn rang out over the fields of heaven. The battle was over, the sun was approaching the horizon to set on the day. He was on his hands and knees, panting, blinking sweat and blood from his eyes. Slowly he pushed back to sit on his heels. Every muscle ached, he never knew a heavenly corporation could be so sore. He pushed the sweat hardened curls off his brow and winced when his hand came away streaked with blood. Later, I can worry about healing later. Get to the garden. Now. He grabbed his sword and extinguished the flame, paying no mind to the blood stains on the blade, sheathed it and ran.
They had agreed to meet in the garden, their garden. After. To know that the other was safe. Whole. Here. He had promised, Aziraphale had made him promise. As soon as the horn blew, to the garden - their garden - time enough to aid the injured, mourn the fallen, commend the dead to the stars once they were together. Once they were safe in each other’s arms.
He ran, heart in his throat, shallow breaths that burned with brimstone. Past the wounded, dying, dead, and mourning. He blocked out the aftermath, calling forth every memory of him to assuage the fear that memories might be all that remained.

After all, he knows what it’s like, learning to live without Heaven. So Crowley doesn’t push for a relationship right away. He’s letting Aziraphale move at his own pace. No rush.
And then along comes Emerson Bradford: a gorgeous American investor with a heart-melting smile, ocean-blue eyes, and a passion for rare book preservation. He’s heard of Aziraphale. He wants to give Aziraphale everything he needs to take care of his books. He wants to give Aziraphale a lot more, besides. And it seems like Aziraphale wants what Emerson has to give.

Otherwise, humans wouldn’t reproduce as fast as needed.” Aziraphale tried to keep his eyes away from the sinuous body of the demon, all but slithering to his side on the grass, long legs stretched as she propped herself up with an elbow and looked at him with a glint in her eyes.
“That didn’t look very reproductive.”
“Still.”
“Some even had the same sets of pieces!” Crawley kept arguing, voice bordering on outraged. It didn’t make any sense. “Do you have a set, since we’re at it?” She writhed at his side, and she definitely felt something interesting as the fabric of her clothes caressed her legs. She did have a set, after all, which was something she usually didn’t put much Effort into having, but she was trying something new.

Nearly simultaneously, two thoughts had immediately crossed Aziraphale’s mind the moment their lips had touched.
First: This is mad. This is impossible. Or: this is only possible because Crowley believes that loathsome demon Ferngully (?) to have the photograph. A task he’d very nearly succeeded at, if not for Aziraphale. A task that Aziraphale had been excited to reveal, and now, in a tragic turn of events, it’s the very thing he needs to keep hidden if he wants to continue kissing Crowley.
Which leads him to his second realization: Crowley cannot, under any circumstances, discover the photograph.

When Aziraphale flees Heaven with the Book of Life, he's planned for it -- he's alerted other angels stationed on Earth to Heaven's plans, and asked them to take steps so that humans won't get caught up in the inevitable battle he faces with the other archangels. But Crowley shows up too, and he doesn't know the plan, and in the chaos Aziraphale leaps in front of a terrible blow meant for Crowley. And so, still very angry with him, Crowley must get him back to the bookshop (which is full of annoying angels) and help him heal, and try to figure out how to move past their previous fight, because, sure, he's mad at Aziraphale, but he doesn't want him to die.
But soon enough it becomes clear that Aziraphale isn't necessarily dying. He is changing, and no one quite knows what to expect, because this situation has only happened once before, when Supreme Archangel Lucifer Fell and became Satan.

Crowley sat on his bed watching Pride and Prejudice for the 5th time. This bed was his new home. His life raft. "Oh Darcy, you idiot!" He barked at the tv, "Can't you see you're in love?!"
The phone rang. He considered it might be any number of Dukes, minions, or underlings of hell, and eventually settled on answering it as a phone call was still better than a visit.
"Crowley here, in service of the dark lord Shax and Satan our master, how may I help you?"
"Crowley, It's me." He was sure his heart skipped a beat at the sound of Aziraphale's voice.
No answer. "Crowley, are you there? I need to see you."
"...yes. How did you know I'd be here?"
"There are only so many places you'd be."
"There are plenty of places I could be. Loads. Oodles of places."
"...will you come to the bookshop?"
"Yes, I'm coming..."
