Charles gave him a bright grin. “You think I’m charming?”
Edwin ignored him. “And I will act all smitten with you. When they offer you the money to break up with me – and rest assured, throwing money at problems is their only way of handling anything – you will take it. I shall be horribly heartbroken to make them feel guilty and any subsequent romantic partner who is a bit more... mellow than you will be quite welcome.”
Charles stared at him, unsure of how he could’ve ever thought of Edwin Payne as innocent. “Damn... you are a conniving little bastard, aren’t you?”-
Charles Rowland's first impression of Edwin Payne can be summerized as privileged, rich and aloof – also incredibly pretty, but that’s besides the point. However, when Edwin presents him with a scheme to piss off his conservative parents and get some money out of them in the process, Charles can’t resist the siren call of causing mayham for some Tories.

Charles tried to pay attention, because Edwin was really upset, and Charles still didn’t understand why, and it seemed like this might be important. It was just, they’d been at this for a while, and Edwin kept asking him the same questions and not leaving him time to answer, so. His mind may have wandered a bit to how he would reinforce the next cricket bat.
His attention snapped back to the present when Edwin said, “This can’t happen. You can’t risk this, I can’t be the reason you risk it. You have to move on.”
“Move on?” Charles repeated blankly. “Move on from what?”
“From here, Charles!” Edwin shouted, suddenly furious again, suddenly shouting even though his eyes were filled with tears. “You have to go with Death! You have to leave!”
“I don’t want to go with Her,” Charles said, nonplussed.
“Fine, that’s your business, but you can’t keep hanging around me!” Edwin snapped.
Charles’ world suddenly tilted on its axis, sending everything askew. “I can’t?” he asked, his voice small, his heart wide open and exposed.Series

For half a second, Edwin’s vision was filled with a beautiful, ethereal sight. Charles had turned his face up in surprise, eyes wide and lips parted, and his brown eyes reflected the cloud of golden shimmers hovering above him. He was bathed in a gentle light, surrounded by a galaxy of tiny stars.
Then the dust began to settle onto his skin, and Charles’ face contorted. He clapped his hands over his eyes, pressing hard, and drew in a harsh gasp through gritted teeth.

Summary
The iron rebar ran through Edwin’s abdomen and embedded itself into the wall behind him with a sickening thud. The pain was all-encompassing and Edwin knew that it would be enough to discorporate a lesser ghost. For Edwin it wasn’t nearly enough to do that, but it did hurt something horrible. An agonizing kind of burn that went all the way through him and reminded him of being torn in two—a comparison he could unfortunately make with confidence.

The voice is so small, Charles barely hears it over his own shouting. If he hadn’t spent thirty years giving the whole of his attention to that one little word spoken by that one little voice, surely it would’ve been lost to the lazy lapping of the waves. Instantly, Charles turns back to Edwin.
“Hey, mate, I’m right here.” Charles reassures. “You’re alright, we’re all alright, yeah? Just hang on. We’ll get you sorted.”
It’s only then that Charles realizes that Edwin isn’t simply shaking—he’s shivering.
“It’s cold…” Edwin whispers.

“Oh yeah, you really looked like you were managing fine Lockwood, laying on your back, staring into that ghost’s eyes like you wanted to take it out to dinner,” I laughed wryly. “It was quite romantic actually.”
“Lucy! This isn’t a joke. We agreed, only when necessary and safe would you try and communicate with ghosts by talking to them, in controlled situations only. That was not the circumstance tonight. What you did tonight was so dangerous, that ghost was strong,” he seethed.
“I know it was strong. It worked out ok, didn’t it? I distracted it enough that it came for me and you had time to jab it in the back. Lockwood I’m not a bloody child. Stop telling me off and stop babying me. I’m never going to apologise for protecting you,” I threw at him. “So, if that’s what you’re waiting for, you may as well go to bloody bed.”
He grit his teeth and advanced, backing me up until my back hit the wall. I frowned up at him. Who the hell does he think he is?
“You are absolutely infuriating Lucy,” He glared down at me.
“Yeah? Well… So are you, Anthony,” I replied with as much sass as I could muster, and not willing to be cowed, I tugged roughly on his tie.
