He breathed deeply through his nose to try and calm the unsteady flutter of his heart. A deep breath. One that clawed at his nose, one that penetrated his nostrils like a liquid, a smothering sting he felt intruding behind his eyes.

“The statistical high for suicide in the United States year over year,” he says in a cheery drawl, and strolls in.

Frederick Chilton can't eat anything interesting, and while the timing is good with the host being what he is, and the circumstances being what they are, he goes looking for the only other person he knows that is upset about that.

Summary
Will Graham is not like either of them. Will Graham is an anomaly to the trend. The psychiatrist in her demands to know why, wants to find out where this came from, how it started, why Will of all people was the one to turn Hannibal’s head. Will’s relationship with empathy makes him special, and Hannibal has always had a penchant for society’s more specialised individuals, but besides that she cannot understand what the catalyst is; how Will has managed to so acutely snare Hannibal’s affections so powerfully that she can see it written all over his face as she looks at him.
She understands well enough what Will’s interest in Hannibal might look like. Hannibal is unique, too. Ostentatious yet often inconspicuous. Warm yet terribly, achingly cold. Alluring yet terrifying, this one she knows particularly well because she has always been drawn to Hannibal, despite a lingering sickness in her stomach that reminds her that she’s in danger; balanced on a knife edge at all times. It’s understandable that Will would want to delve into this world, as she has, but she can’t understand what makes Hannibal want to delve into Will’s.

Molly deals with the aftermath.
Frowning, Molly turns to retrieve two mugs from the cupboard. As she slides them from the cupboard she asks, “You think they’ll come back?”
“It isn’t likely they’ve left,” Freddie explains, eyes trailing over Molly’s hands as she sets the mugs down and pours their coffee. “Jack Crawford is looking for them in Florence. Hannibal’s ex-psychiatrist turned up a week ago missing a leg. You tell me what continent they’re on.”
The mug Molly is holding clatters against the counter top loudly, and coffee sloshes everywhere.
“Excuse me?” Molly finds herself laughing, sharp voiced and flabbergasted. She turns again, enough to see Freddie, smirking and staring back at her from the kitchen table.

This is what the story could have been without Hannibal being toxic, manipulative, and abusive towards Will while still keeping the core traits of his character the same (he's still a psychopath, he's still a serial killer, he's still a cannibal).

She tries it out in the bathroom mirror. She plans how long it takes to get to Wolf Trap, Virginia from where she is - 46 minutes in good traffic. Enough time to say it approximately 276 more times. They say it’s a habit after 30, so maybe between now and Will Graham’s house, it’ll sound better.

Instead of just doing what Hannibal tells her, a spooked Abigail finds Will before the dinner with Jack. On a road trip to Louisiana and on to, perhaps, a new life free of Hannibal’s influence, Will and Abigail learn who the other is now, Abigail sort-of gets a new dad, and Will wonders if love with Hannibal can be anything but a slaughterhouse floor.
(Or, in which Abigail isn’t a suitable substitute for therapy but maybe a fed-up teenager getting him to face his feelings is what he needs anyways. Abigail just wants to live and maybe kiss a girl.)
