“Ah.”
“‘Ah’,” Ilya repeats, giving him a look before he looks back to the tidily stacked frozen mouse packages in the freezer and makes a face as a little badly-hidden shudder moves through him. “Why the fuck do you have mice in your freezer, Shane? You are doing serial killer shit now? This is why you have cottage in the middle of nowhere? For serial killer things?”
“It’s for Spaghetti,” Shane says.
Ilya gives him an absolutely horrified look at that and turns a little green, which makes him remember that Spaghetti isn’t just his snake's name.
“Not food!” He rushes to explain. “Not food spaghetti! Snake Spaghetti!”
“What the fuck are you even saying right now,” Ilya says, looking honestly a little concerned that Shane might have something going wrong in his head.
(Distancing himself from almost twenty years of owning a snake, Shane can indeed see why this situation might be a little alarming for someone on the outside looking in.)
(It also clues him in to the fact that maybe it’s not just Spaghetti who should have gotten a little adjustment period.)

Okay, fine. Ilya did not want to go. As much as he loved their team, he did not want to share his precious summertime with Shane paddling around a lake like some kind of 1800s fur trader. And frankly, he did not want to find out what constituted “real” nature in Shane’s mind.

And yet, Shane didn’t actually know much about it. He was too chicken, too prudish, maybe. He thought he was too good to ever need to know. Maybe Rozanov was right.
“Okay.” Ilya’s agreement startled Shane from his thoughts. “My Jane… she is good lay, mm? The best, maybe. And she doesn’t like coke, not even for fun. So, I will not do it. One year. To prove a point and keep her happy. I do not have addiction problem, so will be easy-peazy. And when I win, I will get whatever I want. Okay?”

“No,” Hollander says primly. “And it’s a disease. Not a diet.”
He pulls his hands out of the cold and turns, blinks. “What?”

Shane looked down at the dark squiggly shape on his delt, an irregular blob slightly bigger than a loonie. Its edges were a series of indentations and protrusions, kind of like a jigsaw puzzle piece. If he’d seen this on anyone else, he would’ve assumed it was a tattoo, too. A shitty one that should be lasered off ASAP.

Summary
So to see him lose his demeanor and act like he had actual feelings? Ilya would pay hundreds of money just to see that sight, and a hundred more to be the reason why Shane snapped.
Hence why he gets such a kick out of pushing Shane’s buttons—he gets to do it so easily because they’re roommates, and it’s all for free.
But Ilya’s not laughing anymore, no.
Not when those buttons have suddenly become jammed.
Shane seems to have had enough of his roommate's messy lifestyle. Ilya, the roommate, desperately tries to show him he can change.
