Summary
Arthur Pendragon belongs to an elite Wildland firefighting division known as Smokejumpers. A well-trained unit of men and women who jump from planes with their parachutes, courage, strength, and all the gear they can carry to attack fires in remote and dangerous areas to put them out before they can spread. They risk their lives, spending weeks and months away from family and their regular lives to protect and manage the forests.
After the death of his mentor and dear friend Leon in a wildfire, Arthur is to step into his shoes and train the latest crop of rookies. One of which just happens to be Merlin Ambrose, the kid he used to pick on and torment back in school. A skinny genius with glasses and big ears, who would be much better suited as a college professor, not someone who could ever hope to survive Smokejumper training.
Then Merlin walks in the door and upends Arthur's world. This Merlin is not the same kid he once knew. This Merlin is a heartbroken father of a five-year-old son whose mother Freya died in childbirth. An experienced firefighter, more than capable of not only becoming a Smokejumper but of being one of the best. In the process, Arthur realizes a few things about himself and Merlin... -

“I see that,” Knight Gwaine says.
“I want this place to exist here forever. Forever and ever and ever.”
“You mean until King Arthur climbs out of it?”
“Yes,” Merlin says. “But after that, too, since I’m not like, 100% positive that he’s going to know what a fish ladder is. I figure we’ve got to do some work on that and probably his English before we let him go off into the wild.”
“Right. Obviously, the English. But what happens if someone tries to put another body in the lake while you’re here?”
Merlin doesn’t have an answer to that.
(Three women's bodies are dumped into a lake, and detective Gwaine Morgan is assigned the case. He does not anticipate said lake to be guarded by a local 12 year-old and is even less prepared for what happens when the 12 year-old becomes his murderer's next target.)

Potter is utterly livid. He turns on himself, but stops at the door’s skirt. There’s a beat of silence and Draco doesn’t look, clamps his eyes shut, holds his breath. Potter says it on an exhale, so that it rings true and honest and crystal clear to Draco’s ears.
“You’re not worth it, anyway.”
It’s another blow to the head, a contravention with Draco’s name on it, a new poison to be served at breakfast. Draco doesn’t think he could shrink into himself any further if he tried. Potter walks away and he must be halfway gone already when Draco hears him say, low and resentful, in a manner that reminds him of his own father.
“Your father said: forgive me.”
