Some days, Eleven remembered what happened in the lab, and other days, she did not. Notebooks were supposed to be her safe haven, something she could use to piece together the past and present of her life, but that’s not how her brain worked, and that’s not how Hawkins worked either. They don’t care about the difference between a thought and a threat. Or context.
And it really only takes one bad misunderstanding to turn a girl into a headline.

Summary
December 1987. A few months have passed since Eleven and her friends killed Vecna once and for all, and Mike is visiting the Byers and El in California for the holidays as they wait for paperwork that will allow El to return to Hawkins without fear of government intrusion.
Experiencing night terrors, El confides in Mike about the extreme bullying she experienced from Angela and Jake, her worries about being smart enough to finish school, and darker, more hidden memories of her life in Hawkins Lab with Dr. Brenner.
As Mike helps her face some of her painful past, Eleven struggles to distinguish between conditional and unconditional love.
