Inanna, the Mesopotamian goddess, descended into the underworld at the behest of her recently widowed sister Ereshkibal. As she descended through each of seven gates, Ereshkibal commanded that all Inanna's armor, jewelry, and clothing be stripped item by item, which robbed her of her divine powers.
