Before anything else, before any true sense or deliberate thought, Kimiko is entirely aware of the warmth in her bones and the peace in her mind. They both give way to a feeling deep in her chest, a contentment that quietly engulfs her.
It’s almost like she’s waking to a memory, one marred by blood and metal into an obscene, impossible fairy tale.

It’s enough for Eddie to peer into the window as Buck heaves at the car door with the jaws of life, armed with a penlight. “Ma’am, can you tell me your name?”
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” the girl says, which doesn’t quite sound like a name to Eddie. He’s just about to tell her as much until she goes, “You’re LAFD Updates man.”

It crept up on him, just like it always had -- somehow shifting from being so on-edge that he could barely sleep, to a state where sleeping was all he wanted to do anymore. He was never quite sure where the transition occurred, or how it was possible to move between two seemingly opposite sets of feelings with such… ease. Not that it was easy; it wasn’t at all. But it was familiar, at least, and David found that oddly comforting.
