Summary
Napoleon likes to think he’d have rescued Illya Kuryakin even if he wasn’t his soulmate, but he’ll never know for sure. What he knows is that after he dragged Illya out of the harbor, he vowed never to let it show again. Having a soulmate was a serious liability, and even moreso in this business. That vow was only solidified when it became clear that he wasn’t Illya’s soulmate—the bastard hadn’t flinched when Rudi had been lighting up Napoleon like a Christmas tree. So obviously, Napoleon was taking this little secret to the grave.
(Napoleon and Illya have spent two years keeping the truth that they are soulmates a secret from everyone—including each other. But when Illya gets captured, that information suddenly becomes mission critical.)

He doesn’t go more than ten feet before the glint becomes more solid, and finally resolves into, yes, a mailbox. Thank fuck. There are letters on the side that he can’t quite make out until he gets closer.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Alex shouts into the white void. The snow muffles most of the sound. Of all the fucking people.
(After an ill-advised attempt to get off the mountain before a snow storm hits, Alex finds himself stuck for god knows how long sharing the too-large house of his least favorite neighbor. Good thing there are lots of bedrooms, so at least he can stay far away from Henry Fox. Right?)

Summary
It’s not that he’s not thrilled for his best friend, or doesn’t want to be part of his big day. Henry wouldn’t miss Pez’s wedding for the world, and it’s going to be a wonderful day. But these days, weddings mostly serve to remind Henry of how far away something like that is for him. He hasn’t had a serious boyfriend in years, and he’s not getting any younger.
It’s fine. It’s just one day, after all. He just has to focus on Pez, on being happy for him and Liam, and he’ll make it through.
(After traveling to Texas for his best friend's wedding, Henry makes some questionable decisions, meets a gorgeous and intriguing stranger, and ends up kissing said stranger beneath the starlit sky. It's not a bad day. But maybe not the one he intended to spend the rest of eternity in.)

Summary
As if he could ever forget Barbados. The circumstances necessitated a very specific type of cover—the only time Napoleon and Illya had been asked to fake being in a romantic relationship. It had come near the end of UNCLE’s run, which was probably a good thing, even though ultimately it hadn’t actually required much of them. A few casual yet affectionate touches in public, standing close together, some lingering looks. Not that different than how they usually behaved around each other, which, no, he wasn’t going to think too hard about. It had been easy to fall into that mindset, and Napoleon had worried that his careful mask had slipped enough for Illya to glimpse the too-real feelings beneath.
But then, not even a month later, UNCLE had disbanded and it was a moot point. He was never going to see Illya again. Except now he’s staring up at his former partner, being asked to pretend he’s in love again.
(Ten years after UNCLE was disbanded, Illya asks Napoleon with help with a mission that will test their partnership and blur the lines between what is a cover and what's real.)

At his position on the periphery of the funeral, Alex scowls as he unconsciously twists the signet ring around his pinky. Henry wouldn’t have wanted all this. The fake burial. The pomp and circumstance. Certainly wouldn’t have wanted his grandmother making a speech about his service and calling his death the ultimate sacrifice for his country. It’s all bullshit, anyway. Henry didn’t die for freedom, or patriotism, or even to keep his homeland safe.
Henry died saving Alex’s life, and Alex will carry that scar on his heart for the rest of his life, along with the ring that was the only thing that was left of his partner.
