Bucky isn't doing too well right now. His best friend (or, the man he loved - but Bucky ain't one for dramatics, so he'll just keep sayin' friend) decided to live an entire life without him, the US government wants to imprison or kill him, HYDRA might still be around, and he's displaced in time. Again.
Good news is, he's not completely alone, at least for the moment. And when he has to go on the run again, he'll find out that help comes from the most unexpected places.

Steve saves him.
In a way, Bucky wishes he hadn’t, because at least then Bucky could’ve pretended that those letters from Spokane and Tucson and Philadelphia never arrived. Bucky could’ve died imagining that Steve was safely in Brooklyn, clinging to life with the skin of his teeth, maybe taking Rebecca and Alice out dancing.
But Steve does, and Steve is. Is.
Bucky doesn’t know how to describe him anymore. Doesn’t know how to draw him anymore either.
The book is gone. Bucky takes a deep breath, looks down at his shaking hands, balled into fists on top of a new blank journal, and starts again from the beginning.

Steve saves the universe - but it takes him awhile to be okay again.
In the end, it's like the snap never happened at all. Time rewinds on itself like a yo-yo, wrapping up the long thread of years that the world spent in mourning and chaos until all of it is tucked neatly away, out of sight.
Except for Steve.

Summary
While on a mission storming a HYDRA facility, James Buchanan Barnes touches one of the many strange alien devices collected by the Red Skull. He does this, in fact, twice— in the past, and in the future.
Next thing he knows, Bucky Barnes is opening his eyes in the 21st century, which is full of great gadgets and coffee, and at least includes his old pal Steve. (And, inexplicably, a different Stark.) Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier finds himself in the middle of World War Two, helping Captain America hunt down HYDRA (which is at least familiar), pretending to be Bucky Barnes (which is not), and figuring out the very noisy group of soldiers who call themselves the Howling Commandos.

“If you’re implying the Soldier is like a nuclear shadow, then that is seriously fucking dark, man,” Sam said dryly.

Before the fall of the Soviet Union, the Winter Soldier was sent to the American arm of Hydra - only there was a malfunction in the cryo-unit that meant it couldn't be opened, and it was left, powered but abandoned, in an underground base.

His second favorite thing about the phone was that he could send Tony photographs of the back of his own head when he’d clearly not known Bucky was there. This would result in Tony cursing for a prolonged period and starting to always stand with his back to a wall. This was subverted when Clint decided to join the game, and would take photographs of the back of Tony’s head when Tony was carefully keeping Bucky in sight, and then send them to Bucky, who could then send it to Tony. Who was starting to get deeply paranoid about the whole situation.
