“Hualing,” Liu Mingyan groans, resting her brush over her inkwell so it won’t drip over her manuscript. Sha Hualing is, as always, like a drop of blood blooming over pure white cotton, so vividly irreverent that she makes the rest of the room even shabbier in comparison. Night hunting is never quite as glamorous as the ballads make it seem; for one, the inns are rarely furnished as suits the needs of either a Xian Shu head disciple or a part-time infamous novelist.

It would be a student of his that discovered how to kill Yue Qingyuan—and in a way that so precisely mimicked Xuan Su’s bottomless, devouring greed, no less.
Stab wounds feel at first like a blow before the body recognizes the intrusion and protests with shrieking, fiery pain. Both sensations are easy to ignore. It was only when that agony had bloomed into a curdling chill that Yue Qingyuan had registered the true nature of this trap, and despaired.

You have to wait until it runs its course and leaves your system on its own," Mu Qingfang says in an apologetic voice. Said voice would've been more believable if he didn't look like a parent who realized he needed to tell kids that their long-awaited ride to Disneyland was canceled.
"I see," says Shen Qingqiu.
And then he bursts into tears.
Shen Qingqiu gets hit by a wife plot that forces him to cry everytime he experiences any strong emotion. It goes as well as you would expect...

It’s kind of a surprise that he can rescue the protagonist so quickly, but he isn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth. And Liu Qingge’s presence, however sticky, means that he can spar in this strong body any time he wants – life at Cang Qiong really is good!Meanwhile, if Shen Qingqiu had been more willing to discuss his past with the only person who was part of it, then perhaps it would not have taken him three full years to realize that his childhood friend is gone.
When the only other option is living without Qi-ge, he devotes himself to hunting down his soul. Unfortunately, this is pretty difficult when the man wearing Yue Qingyuan’s face has ordered that he not leave the mountain.(It’s not really a surprise when he begins hallucinating Qi-ge.)

“For all we know, the perpetrator invented this little trap just for us,” Shen Qinqiu says, tapping his fan dangerously. “Tailormade to ruin us.”
“I have no secrets to hide,” Liu Qingge says, and lifts his chin challengingly at Shen Qingqiu, who bristles in return. “Do you?”
“Ah, Liu-shidi, if you don’t have any secrets then you should get some real quick!” Shang Qinghua says with bright, manic cheer, his smile and his eyes a little too wide. “The consequences for not meeting the curse’s requirements would be very very bad!”

Perhaps the biggest mistake Shen Qingqiu makes in this moment is not his confidence in Luo Binghe’s abilities nor the potential ripple effects of the changed situation surrounding his broken seal: it’s that he doesn’t think to be cautious of Luo Binghe.
Shen Qingqiu, in his years in this role, has never harmed Luo Binghe. He hasn’t betrayed Luo Binghe yet. Shen Qingqiu has become far too accustomed to their easy, fond companionship. He forgets, in this moment, the way qi balance shifting wildly out of equilibrium can make people behave in unexpected, unpredictable, often violent ways.
Even toward those they love.

“It is not,” the man spits, sounding almost affronted. Then he makes a strange sound. Is he trying to laugh, too? “Or, well.” There’s a pause, or maybe Yue Qi’s awareness just lapses again. “Where do you think you are right now, Yue Qi?”
The question makes Yue Qi feel cold, even colder than he already is. He shivers. “How can you not know the Ling Xi caves, if you’re here with me?” he demands. A new thought hits him like a thunderclap right between the eyes. “Are you here to get me out?”
Yue Qingyuan is left injured and poisoned in a cave after a fight. His mind drifts.

The question is directed towards a young child swimming in black robes far too elaborate and spacious for his minuscule size. The child simply blinks his big, dark eyes in response. It’s a familiar mannerism, and one that has only gotten cuter amidst accidental age regression.
Tianlang-jun brings Zhuzhi-lang back to life. It doesn't quite go as planned.

“Sect Leader,” the child breathes. His eyes are large and dark in his face, and he seems to feel the mortification of having had a witness to this scene more heavily than the offer of deliverance.
