Summary
What seems to be a standard double homicide quickly unravels into a kidnapping, and Hank finds himself looking after two boys with a mysterious past. His strangest case turns into his biggest blessing as the three of them become family, but despite his best efforts, Hank was never able to solve the murders or learn where his new sons came from.
This comes back to bite him when Connor and Nines’ previous caretakers want them back.
Connor disappears and it leaves a hole in the family. Hank struggles with guilt, Nines with responsibility. After years of searching, they’ve all but given up when new evidence arises that might have all the answers they’ve been searching for.
Meanwhile, Connor’s been refined into the perfect soldier, and with some help, he’s determined to return to his family and take down CyberLife by using the weapons they gave him in their efforts to create something more than human.

Summary
When Rawlins arrived that morning, Connor felt the first pang of unease.
The man was large, broad-shouldered, with the kind of weathered face that looked carved from stone. Deep-set eyes, a nose that had been broken at least twice, and the permanent shadow of stubble along his jaw. He wore his coat like armour, unbuttoned, revealing a holster strapped openly at his hip.
He didn’t offer his hand. Didn’t greet Connor with so much as a nod. Instead, his eyes flicked once to Connor’s LED, and his mouth twisted. “So this is the machine I’ve heard about.”
“Hello, my name is Connor,” Connor supplied. “I’ll be your partner until Lieutenant Anderson is cleared to return.”
Rawlins grunted, brushing past him. “We’ll see.”
Or, after Hank is placed on medical leave, Connor is reassigned to a new partner from a different precinct. Unfortunately, his new partner is more interested in using Connor as a tool than treating him like a living being.

“Like this.” The android’s tone is nothing but pure frustration, and so are his vague gestures. “I’m… God, I should be happy, I should be grateful… I should be happy, but I’m not. There’s something wrong with me—there is something deeply and fundamentally wrong with me.”

Connor, a person of magical talent, is taken from his biological family (consisting of Hank, his older brother Nines/Conan, his twin brother Collin/Sixty, and his younger brother, Cole) by Amanda Stern through questionable legal means when he's only five years old; she brings him up to hate all things magic. Six years later, Hank's wife (their biological mother) dies tragically in a car accident. Five years after that, Jericho, a center for abused magical people and creatures, finds Connor and extracts him from Amanda's grasp, beginning his healing process and his integration into magical society.
It's been eleven years since Hank's seen his son, eleven years since Collin's had his twin, eleven years since Conan's had three other brothers (something Cole's never even known), eleven years since Sumo's seen his best friend.
Hank prays to whatever god is out there that he can convince Connor to come back home to them.
