“You of all people should know this robe has seen far worse. Besides,” he waves, brushing away a stray piece of dust, “It’ll take more than a little mess to keep me out of here tonight.”
Victor snorts. “Oh, please, do tell. I’d love to know what finally got you to drag your ass down here after two weeks of nothing.”
Mac is stunned silent for possibly the first time in recent memory that didn’t involve being on the wrong end of a knife.

A signet ring, made of polished gold and engraved with climbing ivy. A hot bath after too long in the cold, and the reflection it offers. Clothes made of cotton and silk, juxtaposed in white and black. Soft featherdown and the moments that come with it in the morning.
Things will be alright, at least here, at least for now.

"Who the fuck are you?" He tries to snap, but his tongue is heavy and the words come out all blurred together.
"You can call me Queen, Mr. Price. But I doubt you'll be doing much talking once we start."
"You sound awful confident," they slur, trying again to burn through their restraints. The wards whine and complain, trying to break through whatever is making Victor's head blur, but the cuffs still don't budge.
Queen laughs. The sound pings across the room, bright like coins from a slot machine.

Ciri groans. The weight of the blade in her hands started to feel like a thousand pounds almost an hour ago, and now it’s simply dead weight being swung around by tired, wobbly arms.
“We’ve gone over the positions a hundred times today, Geralt. I could probably do them in my sleep by now.”
“That’s the point,” the man says simply, shifting opposite her and raising his sheathed blade back to the ready.

Mac’s touch is usually light, but the arm he has wrapped around Victor right now feels almost immovable. Or maybe it’s just the fact that Victor doesn’t really want to go, not just yet.

“Confident, are we?” Mac remarks, fluidly swinging his polearm behind one shoulder and looking at Victor down the blade’s edge. “I certainly hope you can keep that hubris in check.”
And now Victor’s kingly smile is replaced by a wry grin, his feet smoothly sliding out into a fighting stance. They’d been dying to knock Mac down a few pegs for weeks now, and this was the perfect opportunity.

It’s possible that Mac is going to say something else, but right as he inhales something stops him. His right hand flexes, as though something has curled around his wrist. A split-second later there’s a muffled buzzing from the far right of the desk, on the edge closest to the strange bookshelves.

Victor sets down the coffee with a faint clink, sliding it ever so slightly towards Mac’s hand. Mac doesn’t seem to see for a few seconds, his brow furrowed as he scrubs through a clip a half dozen more times before exhaling and glancing down at the mug.
