Despite the teasing lilt, a soft, rolling r in strong, Shane can tell that Rozanov is being sincere. He has never gotten the impression that Rozanov uses it as an insult with him—unlike every time he whips it out mid-game to taunt an opponent, or to provoke someone in an interview. Shane blinks down at him, and is reminded of what this is. Of why, in every way, they are implausible.
Rozanov adds, “What?”
“You just never call me that,” Shane says. His grip on Rozanov’s shoulder tightens.

Ilya, who is staring sightlessly out at the grim Ottawa skyline, does not respond. He hears a cough. Hollander says, “You should be—“
“I heard you first time, Hollander.”
Silence. Then, “Right.”
Ilya does not want to study. All Ilya wants right now is to go home, and perhaps to have a very strong drink. But here in this stupid country his billet family are very insistent about checking that their fifteen year old charge does not drink, smoke, or ever have fun, and from what Ilya can tell they enjoy foisting their equally irritating son on him to ensure that this remains the case. Hollander, to his credit, does not seem particularly enthusiastic about this plan, but that does not make Ilya dislike him any less.

At some point their relationship got fucked up enough that Ilya helps wax Shane’s pubes when they’re in town together, instead of doing normal couple things like watching Iron Chef or having brunch. Ilya thinks it started happening around, after the time he had to beg Shane not to bleach his asshole but before they both started peeing while taking showers together. “I just want a clean slate,” he tells Ilya very seriously, but they come to a compromise that he should keep something short and trimmed above his dick. Ilya, on the other hand, is under strict instruction to never touch any of his pubic hair, lest Shane have nothing to hold on to when he’s working the head with the back of his throat, so it’s kind of a shock when he says, “We should wax your ass too.”

Ilya’s vision whites out, his knees nearly buckle. He’s grateful for the wall as he grabs at Hollander and pulls him in tight, shoving a thigh between Hollander’s legs, sucking and biting at his lips, groaning loud and uninhibited as Hollander’s hand comes up to the back of his neck, fingers twisting into his curls. The kiss is furious and wet and hot and so much, Ilya is so fucking hot for it, he’s been thinking about this for weeks, reading through his text thread with Jane, jerking off almost every night with the memory of the last time playing in a loop behind his eyelids.
He’s never wanted anything like he wants sex with Hollander, and it sort of feels like they’ve already been going at it for hours, every glance and chirp and hit on the ice has been building to this, working him, driving him fucking crazy.

A year after mysteriously dropping out of the 2009 draft, Shane Hollander is signed by the Boston Raiders, right behind Ilya Rozanov. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston — but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans.
